The hype was unreal leading up to this album. Time moved so much slower back then and those five years that passed since American Idiot felt like at least ten. I was on a school trip to Paris when it was released. Even though me and my friends already had the leak downloaded we walked aroung looking for a record store to buy the physical CD. That album still takes me back to that week. Nostalgic memories for sure.

It feels like See the Light rarely gets mentioned, but for me it's probably one of the three best songs on it. The end strech from The Static Age to See the Light is the best part of the album for me. And it's without a doubt Green Day's second best album, after AI, imo.

 

The 21CBD tour was the first tour that I ever went to that I actually wanted to go to and didn't just tag along with my parents to and it literally changed my life

 

Definitely one of my most anticipated albums of all time. Felt like it took them a lifetime to make it.

 

Yeah I remember the anticipation, and listening / re-listening to the MP3s shortly after it came out.

I seem to be in a minority about the ending stretch lol

 

Haha the time between albums really did feel like 10 years.

 

I'd just started eighth grade when American Idiot came out, and 21st Century Breakdown came out like two weeks before my high school graduation, so it really did feel like a whole big chapter of my life passed in the time that it took them to put out a new record.

 

I don’t think I was overly hyped for 21cbd. I was excited cause Green Day was a foundational band for me. But nothing that different for me. Not saying others may have been overly hyped. Just sharing my experience.

 

I remember hearing a DJ on the radio say that the band was almost done with the album and my anticipation shot into the stratosphere.

 

I started falling off Green Day before American Idiot was even out. It came out right after I graduated high school. I liked a couple songs on it, but I don't think I ever actually bought it. I didn't even listen to 21CB or anything after until just a couple years ago I think haha.

 

14 year old me was stoked when the Know Your Enemy music video premiered on MTV. I remember watching it over and over

 

I might be wrong but I remember Fuse doing a "Greatest Green Day Music Videos" or maybe just songs countdown type of show, and they put Know Your Enemy at #1 and even at 15 years old I remember that feeling pretty suspicious

 

American Idiot came out the beginning of my Senior year of high school. Absolute game changer for me. Especially at that time of my life. The buzz around the title track when that was released was amazing. I remember watching the video premier.

by the time 21CB came out i was finishing up college and I wasn’t as hyped for it for some reason. I think because i was into other music at the time. I know ‘Know Your Enemy’ didn’t help any.

when the album finally released I remember not being into it. It was alright. I’ve heard better, heard worse. It was…eh. But over the years I’ve started loving it and now all I wish for is Green Day to release another album similar to AI and 21CB.

I also like to think MCR went through the same thing. Black Parade was a prolific release and then followed up by Danger Days (even though Danger Days is my favorite MCR album lol).

 

I went to look things up. I thought Enema of the State and Dookie came out a tthe same time. I was quite wrong.

Sum 41 All Filler was 2001....

So what was up against Dookie a tthe same time?

 

Same exact time or just same general time? Cause Smash from Offspring came out in 94 too.

 

Im just trying to remember, on the radio, if they played Green Day, I think they played Blink (or Soundgarden) right after.

 

Not sure what you mean by "up against" but 1994 when Dookie was released was still mired in the grunge sound Live's Throwing Copper, Bush's Sixteen Stone, Pearl Jam's Vitalogy, Soundgarden's Superunknown, Weezer's Blue Album, NINs Downward Spiral, Beastie Boy's Ill Communication... not all grunge albums but what a time to be alive!

 

1994 was a banner year for big rock releases.

 

So much music out there at that time.

 

Unsure if it's just me but it felt like pop punk and emo were exploding into the mainstream in 2004 and American Idiot asserted itself as the top dog with perfect timing. 21CBD arrived when that wave had really receded and felt more like a dying breath for the genre being commercially viable.

 

Yeah, I think it might've been recieved better if it was released like only a year earlier. The Offspring's You're Gonna Go Far, Kid is the last rock song I remember hearing on (Swedish) pop radio and that was in 2008. I might be talking out of my ass here but it feels like that was the last breath for rock bands regularily crossing over into the mainstream and 21CB missed that window. At least over here in Scandinavia.

 

Yeah I'm in Australia and it was pretty similar. Oh Love got some airplay but nothing major. There would be some exceptions but for the most part it feels like the last song to make a real dent here might have been... maybe The Pretender by Foo Fighters?
