Finished the first Chronicles of Amber book. Quick easy read and I didn't know it was in first person when I started it, which is always a nice change of pace. On to the next!

This McClellan book just isn't quite clicking for me yet. A little over halfway through Promise of Blood. Anyone else read his works?

I got that last week because it had high praise but I’m not sure how I feel about military fantasy. I’ll give it a shot at some point though. Feel like I’m on book overload at the moment!

There’s a lot going on that I like… there’s just no sense of setting. I have no idea what anything looks like or space. It’s a weird thing in high fantasy.

Does anyone know if there is a way I would be able to purchase the UK version of an audiobook as opposed to the US version, with my being in the US...???

I just discovered that there is a different version of a particular audiobook in the UK with a different person reading who I like a lot better than the person that does the US version, but I havent been able to find a way to get it any of the usual places that I buy audiobooks.

Since I know that I have the right audible friends here…is there a way to find out if the ebook comes with using an audible credit or not? My wife has a few audible credits she wasn’t going to use so I wanted to. Sometimes the ebook downloads to my kindle automatically and then some others it’s truly just the audiobook, but I am not sure how to see before I use the credit. I ask only because there are certain books I like to “read” instead of listen to.

I have never personally gotten an ebook copy with an audible purchase. This seems like an easy layup for the industry as a whole, and one thing Sanderson called out recently. But I do know if you buy an ebook, sometimes you get “whispersync” pricing for a cheaper audiobook.

It's The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I've sampled the American version and I'm not really crazy about the narrator, but I just discovered that the UK version has an altogether different person and his voice sounded great in the quick sample.

I feel kinda silly and nitpicky quibbling about that, but with them being so expensive to buy I would rather get the one with the narrator I like more if I am going to spend the money.

Can you buy it directly from Amazon? The Name of the Wind: The Kingkiller Chronicle, Book 1 (Audio Download): Patrick Rothfuss, Rupert Degas, Orion Publishing Group: Amazon.co.uk: Books

I'm not sure on the intricacies of how it all works internationally but i assume you can perhaps make a UK account and buy it directly?

Looking on Reddit etc there seems to be a few fixes but not sure on how well they work out.

Now wondering if the reason I mildly tolerated the first/absolutely hated the sequel is the narrator...

I didn't go all the way through with the order, like I never pulled the trigger so to speak, but I went through the process of almost buying it to see, and it wouldn't let me get that version and kept redirecting me back to the US one. I didn't try to actually make a different account though, which I didn't really think of. I might try that.

Do you have both of those Kingkiller books in audiobook...? I didn't think the narrator for NoTW was actively bad like some other books I have heard, but once I heard the sample of the person doing the UK one I just vastly preferred that person.

I did a few years back. I disliked them so much I returned them.

Someone on Reddit mentioned that it would be a new account but you can listen through the same Audible app since it picks it up from device. Again, unsure on the logistics of this.

I do think you have to log out and in in the app, because recently I logged into the wrong country (you can use your account for every country) and nothing was there

Ahhhh right. Hopefully there's some sort of workaround for this anyway

You should just be able to go to Audible.co.uk and buy it there (provided it accepts your payment methods) and then log into the UK version in the Audible app (you can pick countries somewhere) and listen to what you bought on the UK store. Like I said what I think you can't do is merge all your purchases, meaning you will have to log in and out in the app if you use the stores of multiple countries.

Honestly I wasn't into Name of the Wind but I do think a part of that was the audiobook narrator

I'm going to try this method.

Honestly, I am looking for a fantasy audiobook to help me relax / fall asleep at night. It's a tough balance to strike, looking for a book that I don't actively hate but also don't find riveting or engaging enough to keep me awake. Usually I put on a book that I have read / listened to hundreds or at least dozens & dozens of times, sorta like comfort food. I don't mean that as a knock on the book itself or the writing, more just my familiarity with it due to how many times I have read it.

I read NoTW once way back when it first came out, and I remember being pretty much split 50/50 on it, where it had a lot of things I liked about it but also a lot of stuff that I actively disliked a lot. * Edited to add that I usually look for audiobooks that are long so I get a lot of mileage out of them, and I thought I remembered NoTW being pretty long.

Ooh that sounds fun. I haven't read those books but I loved Nix's Keys to the Kingdom series.

Posted this in the Cosmere thread but immediately after realized it should go here too. Barnes & Noble is having a 25% off online sale on preorders for the next couple days. I'm going to pick up a couple of things—The Lost Metal for sure, maybe RF Kuang's new book, probably some other stuff?
