I think besides Dano, and the entire prison sequence, the score was just TOO heavy handed. I appreciate the cinematic quality to this adaptation, and I really love the score, but holy shit if I have to hear his theme one more time lol like let the scenes breath a little

Soundtrack is generally something I pick up more on repeat viewings, but I liked what was done.

I interpreted that as a ruse as well and don’t actually think he knows

The issue I have is that it’s such a grounded in reality type of film but hearing the whole fucking orchestra booming the entire three hours just takes me out of it a bit

This is very different than any Batman movie we've had to date, and that's not a bad thing. Definitely felt the 3 hour run time though. Dano felt like he was perfect for the role until I watched the movie. Not sure why they took him the direction they did. And as much as I love Koeghan, the Joker scene felt almost as bad as the forced ASM2 teases.

With all of that being said, I still very much enjoyed this and would definitely put it on par with Batman Begins as far as introductions to trilogies go.

You think it was just him guessing? And repeatedly saying his name in the jail scene was just him hoping he was right?

What can I say? It worked for me. I’m not super into soundtracks and won’t try to say it’s incredible or anything. It hit me the right way so I wasn’t bothered of it popping up a lot.

As unlikely as that seems, while watching it that’s what I thought

yes, that was my understanding. He was trying to kill Bruce separately not having any idea he was Batman

I did not love that personally

edit: his repeatedly saying the name was him harping on his own failure which was to kill Bruce. Again, did not love that. Thought they should’ve actually went down that path instead of teasing it like that

Interesting. And possible. Like pointed out above, it seems like Bruce was supposed to be a victim and Batman was still supposed to be involved.

I think that’s why I felt it was odd they don’t show us him figuring it out.

But what about the wall at riddlers place covered with Batman and Bruce Wayne material that says “I know the real you?”

while that doesn’t prove he meant that Bruce was Batman, what does it mean if it doesn’t mean that?

Dano says something along the lines of “the real you is when you’re the bat”

“like I’m the real me when I’m wearing my mask”

So he does know Bruce is Batman? I thought you said he didn’t.

Apologies - I’m saying Dano does not know Bruce is Batman

all the signs related to the I KNOW THE REAL YOU signs were, to my understanding at least, that Dano was seeing that Batman was truly himself when he was the Batman and the mask was his other self. And that he and the Batman’s goals were aligned and the Batman would be happy to be rid of Bruce Wayne not knowing they’re one and the same.

Dano says something like he’s his real self when he wears his mask and has that as a similarity. When Batman rebukes him and says he’s wrong, he becomes distraught and freaks out etc

that was what I believe I saw anyways haha

edit - Dano thought Batman would be happy and thrilled with the people that he’s killed since they’re all corrupt Etc

I don’t think he knows Bruce is Batman because he says something to the effect of “Oh we’ll he’s the only one we missed.” And it locks into Batman and his face changes. I interpreted it as him realizing Riddler doesn’t know after being convinced that he did based on the wall in his apartment.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

yeah I don't think Riddler knew Bruce was Batman. the whole thing was a massive mislead and the "reveal" in the jail cell is just that he's saying "Bruce Wayne" over and over again because he's the one target that got away. honestly it's a bit of a cop-out and is one of the reasons the third act seems to be falling short for a lot of people I know who've seen this. would've been a lot more interesting to see Riddler know his identity and have that to potentially hold over Bats' head as leverage

also yeah - Bruce was straight up nasty to Alfred in this movie lmao

I think Batman is the real person and Bruce is the mask.

riddler can still believe that without knowing it’s Bruce, but it seems more shallow if he doesn’t know it is Bruce.

doesn’t he only start freaking out when he is told that he will die alone and not be remembered? That’s well after Batman says they aren’t alike.

Also was that Venom that Bruce used during the last fight to make him go berserk? Interesting idea moving forward if so.

I’ll have to pay more attention during this for my next viewing. I can’t remember the exact phrasing of that line.

repeating Bruce’s name is still a little weird if he is just saying it because he wasn’t killed.

I mean, I’d rather him not know though. Having villains find out identities so early is never a favorite thing of mine. I think stuff like that should always be much deeper into a franchise overall.

I spoiled for myself earlier the bit you guys are talking about and the way it seems to be interpreted is that Riddler doesn't put it together because it would destroy his mental image of Wayne being the enemy and Batman being his idol. So he may even technically know, but refuses to connect the dots.

This definitely felt its length. I very much enjoyed it, but might need another viewing to solidify thoughts. RP is easily my favorite caped crusader. Also loved Wright as Gordon. Honestly could go either way with Catwoman.

We’re gonna do the Joker again?????

    Assume It's A Bit

The interrogation scene really took me out of the movie, but only because, for whatever reason, whenever they showed Riddler's face, I kept seeing Michael Reeves

It is contractually obligated that Joker at least be referenced in the first film of every iteration.

God help us all, but if they’re gonna connect “Joker” with this iteration of Batman, it might be interesting to make Barry’s version one that was inspired by Joaquin. But I’d rather the two stay separate.
