Not the worst part of this of course, but I'm having family from Florida (who I assume are fans of DeSantis and his whole "do nothing about COVID" attitude) coming to NY to visit for the first time since the pandemic, and I was really getting excited for them to have to wear masks and show vaccine cards everywhere. I really wanted them to be annoyed by the way were do things here and to have them whine about it. But, nooo, Adams just had to make life easier for them *sigh*

So I'm confused and want to make sure I'm following correctly. I thought Russia and Ukraine were meeting at the Belarusian border to talk things out, but if Belarus is joining Russia against Ukraine, doesn't that make the border no longer a neutral place to talk?

Help me understand.

 

I think that “talk” was a trap. That’s my feeling anyway.

I always vacillate back and forth between assuming the CIA is always doing crazy, mind blowing shit at all times, and then thinking about the complete incompetence that they/our government has shown repeatedly throughout history and laughing at the idea that they could pull anything legit off lol

Putin and his friends probably mostly have their wealth in dollars though, right? So basically his war/the sanctions are just destroying the lives of all the regular citizens of russia and there really isn't anything they can do about it? Such a mess of a situation. Are there any hopes for actually getting rid of Putin and aid to the Russian people?

 

I think the main hope at this point is that Russians do what they have historically tended to do when a regime is badly losing wars it thought it could win easily and/or going through financial crisis

 

The timing of the deterrent forces announcement right after the “peace talks” announcement is what gives me the most comfort, if any, right now.

 

regarding Russia's military moves being poor so far

again, really want to shout out this twitter list. it's been indispensable for me in keeping on top of what's going on. it's a mix of journalists, academics, wonks, etc etc whose focus is on Russia/Ukraine

some people have weird takes but then you often see them rebuked immediately after by another expert. overall, a good reading experience
