So I beat Dying Light (the first one) for the second time the a little while ago and I played the expansion for the first time and beat it a few days ago. I'm a big fan of the first one, especially the co-op, the environments and personality they added to the stale zombie genre.

I'm playing Dying Light 2 right now and I'm just getting through the opening moments, about an hour in probably. I am so disheartened. They gamified so much that didn't need to be gamified like making running a skill tree upgrade and giving everything the most generic UI and health bars, made all the zombies look incredibly generic/soulless, the character animations are awful and the game goes back and forth between looking like a PS4 and and PS3 game with its models.

I'm going to keep going, but so far, its becoming clear that the positive reviews are the outliers for good reason.

Dying Light 1 reviewed worse, especially considering that scores are trending downwards in general.

i couldn’t warm up to dying light 1 at all but I think 2 is great, but I agree that it’s gamified to all hell. Feels more like I’m playing an RPG than a survival game and the UI truly is garish.

I’m playing on PC so graphics are definitely not an issue haha (except that ray tracing slows everything to a crawl even on my beastly rig)

animations are a known issue and getting patched soon afaik.

  6. Honestly wish Hollow Knight had even just a slightly less difficult option, would've helped with how frustrating I found it to be

the difficulty in Hollow Knight really didn't add anything to the enjoyment of the game, I found it rather detrimental.

I thought it added a lot, made the game more engaging to me. It also gives a better feeling of accomplishment and relief when finishing sections/bosses.

Touching on the Chrono Cross remaster again; I had no idea they did a live orchestral performance of the album and released it back in 2020! Basically all the main songs from the soundtrack. Wasn't on Apple Music but it was an easy buy for me on iTunes. (The Blu-ray artwork is 1000xs better than the album artwork. Will absolutely change that in iTunes)

The remaster is coming to all platforms come to find out, so I may not get it on Switch but on Xbox instead.

Yeah, there's a certain mindset required for HK, and I completely understand people who don't like that mindset. The mindset basically is that you're going to die a lot in frustrating ways, but learn from it and when you finally succeed at what you keep dying from it's going to feel incredible.

Honestly it's how I view life in a nutshell lol.

If HK were easier it would be just another well-made metroidvania. The high difficulty as well as the demand for respect and precision in the platforming and combat are what make it a GOAT in the genre.

Man, picked up on a Bloodborne file I had started a few months ago , great decision. Got humbled by BSB for a bit but that got the rust off and now I am in the ZONE. I prob will aim to finish it in the next couple weeks. I have beaten it before but did it in like 3 different chunks of time with many months separated in between hah. After I finished Demon's Souls Remake (first one I ever finished) I went back to finish BB last year.

I don't want to detract from your point, because I do get what you're saying, but I personally play games to escape from real life, so I really don't need my entertainment to be as frustratingly soul-destroying as reality is. Just my feeling.

I don't mind a difficult game per se, I just didn't enjoy it in HK specifically, mainly because the traversal was so tedious due to the fact how repetitive the biomes were, so each subsequent run just felt more and more drab to get to where I died.

I deff give disclaimers to people irl if I recommend games like HK or Cuphead or of course any Soulsborne games. They ain't for everyone, they even weren't for me for a long time but the journey to learning to enjoy them and keep the rage at a minimum (it deff still happens) has been great

Soooo you don't like metoridvanias, HK is a ton less repetitive than most! Don't get me all fired up this early Lori! Idc what time it is where you are.

I can't lie, I enjoy Metroidvanias more when there's some kind of fast travel. I don't know if Hollow Knight has that. I actually haven't played it yet despite owning it.

It's been a while since I played it but I remember HK being pretty forgiving with it's checkpoints and how easy it is to get from place to place.

There are a couple treks to bosses that are a tad annoying to keep going back to but yeah ultimately the checkpoints are placed pretty generously.

I found HK to be tedious but hey I’m still in day one for silk song.

You're the one complaining about repetitive traversal! What the fuck metroidvania doesn't have that! HK is the smallest offender!

Metroid Dread is close to not being a metroidvania ironically. It was way more linear than I thought it would be, I didn't mind at all but it was surprising.

Idk maybe I didn’t get far evough in my 30 hours but I felt mechanically traversal never got enjoyable. Ori 1 was great in that regard. (I don’t remember 2)
