    The rivalry is back on

Curtis Martin is a great, deserving Hall of Famer

he and Willie Roaf (also a great, deserving Hall of Famer) as the headliners of a Hall of Fame class is not the most comparatively exciting group to me as someone who did not grow up watching either of their teams

I am still so pissed that they put Sam Mills over Zach

    bunch of idiots

I blame ArMAGA Salguero for being the one who presents Zach's HOF "case" to the voters

I don’t think 2x first team all pro playing special teams is enough to be hof. You have to do something special and record setting like Hester imo

5x all pro, 10x pro bowl....he's pretty universally accepted the best at what he does, and also, ya know, a leader/captain of a dynasty lol

As a two time first team all pro he was the best at what he does for two years. I’m not even really sure what he does all the time! Seems appropriate for a ring of honor. We have legends like Zach Thomas trying to get in still, I just don’t see it.

I kinda hope the people who vote for the hall of fame have at least a rudimentary understanding of Special Teams, and maybe an appreciation for how much the greatest coach of all time values it, and in turn, his special teams captain.

I also don't think because other people also deserve to get in that that makes someone less deserving. Thomas should be in, Hester should be in, Slater should be in and you will not now nor ever change my mind haha

Given injuries, Curtis Martin was one of the best RBs of all time purely out of availability and longevity. Dude had literally 10 straight 1000 yard seasons, almost unheard of for a RB to go 10 years and not have at least one season where they fell off because of injury. Martin only missed 4 games from ages 21 - 32. Like, that’s simply nuts, AND his best season was when he was 31.

when I rank favorite runningbacks I usually based it on the eye test - their running style, big play ability, moves and creativity, vision and awareness of where defenders are heading at all times, etc. This is the angle I’m speaking from when I say I’d take Fred Taylor over almost anybody except the obvious elites like LT, Barry, AP, Payton. Fred when he was *healthy* was easily top 10 all time, and missing a lot of time early and then splitting time with MJD in his later healthier years are the only reason his stats don’t look like it.

but if we turn the discussion into a realistic discussion that includes injuries too, and recognizes that you don’t need to be flashy to be efficient and to wear defenses down… Martin goes way higher on that list, and Taylor falls out of the top 10 for sure.

    Also yeah fuck a Slater

you’re on your own Dave haha. Dante Hall was better before him and Devin Hester was better after him so I’m not sure who you’re saying widely acknowledges him as the best returner

Hester and Slater should both be in. I don't understand the hesitancy to put special teams guys in at all. I assume the argument is that there are plenty of players at the skill positions who would have been great special teamers had they only played the position (whereas the reverse is obviously not true with Slater famously having 1 catch), but that doesn't work for me. It's a huge part of the game, and being the best of the best for an extended period of time should get the same HoF consideration. It's particularly egregious with kickers, where having 4 including Blanda is patently absurd 100+ years into the league.

My guy, if you're gonna brag about watching as much film as you do, you should probably know what position the guy you're talking about plays haha

He was a wide receiver who played special teams??? Look, I’m sorry, like 20 special teams tackles in a season is not even close to as valuable as being an elite returner, and when Slater did returns he wasn’t overly impressive

call me when someone forces 4-5 fumbles on kickoffs in a season or something, then we can think about giving defensive special teamers THAT much credit

And using the film thing against me is funny cause of course I don’t sit there and watch and rewatch kickoffs too lol. I would if I was a special teams coach or head coach but I’m not THAT much of a film nerd that I’d actually watch who got each of the kickoff tackles just as a hobby lol. I skip special teams plays tbh

Lol okay so a couple things:

    A) He's not a returner.
    B) I have yet to argue he should get in over Hester. I have advocated for both
    C) For someone who seems to love the nuances of football, it's kinda stunning for you to ignore that special teams, field position are actually like....kinda important.

You’d have to advocate for an overhaul of special teams guys getting into the hall right? Like aren’t the punters more impactful than gunners, and how many punters are in?
