Riot Fest 2022 (September 16-18, Chicago IL) Festival • Page 26

  1. First thing that comes to mind is the potential for some of these 2nd-row acts to be our third headliner.

Second thing is wondering if Japanese Breakfast would deign to play Riot after the year they just had. Their show on Thursday night last year wasn't RFP-affiliated.

Give us Avril Lavigne! Maybe not as headliner but on the same sloth as MGK

  3. Yeah this is where I see Avril landing - I'd be surprised for her to headline and I'd be disappointed for her to play Lolla.

Am I imagining this or have we had a conversation about Modest Mouse here already?

Sunny Day Real Estate would be so sick, but agreed they wouldn't be headlining.
I could see Avril closing the stage MGK closed, with either Weezer or The Strokes headlining.

I love Weezer, but not again (unless they play Blue album in full (yes, again), in that case Go Weezer!)

EDIT: I just realized they have played 3 times at Riot Fest Chicago and from those, they have played Blue Album in full 2 times.

God I hope Riot Fest gets SDRE, a huge bucket list band for me

When does the Foo Fighters stadium tour end? Would be interesting to see if Nate would have his schedule free for a reunion

I have a weird feeling Nate won’t be a part of that SDRE reunion tour. Considering FF’s schedule next year, and not to mention their drummer going on that rant about the scrapped SDRE album a few years back

Honestly, if RF doesn't get them it will seem like a swing and a miss. I understand that SDRE might be on a different time frame and schedules might not line up, but still, seems like a tailor made fit for RF.

Here’s a second draft of my lineup prediction/wishlist. My first one had a few problematic bands I was unaware of…oof.

thats dope! Friday is spicy, i like it alot. biggest note would be the top 4 (+op ivy a few spots deeper) on Saturday are probably ALL headliner worthy so it may be a bit top heavy (but id still be ther in a heartbeat). Sunday leans super old but im still VERY into it, tons of bucket list bands to check off.

Can we get The Appleseed Cast on the lineup one of these years?

Also Jeff Rosenstock and Chris Farren please!

That’s some great feedback! As long as I’m right about all the spooky and most of the older bands, I’ll be a happy camper.

I figured it was a valiant attempt at not having too many repeats or a copy of When We We’re Young.

If Paramore is playing they would be a headliner

Oingo Boingo would be such a sweet reunion! But I don’t think they’d headline. They aren’t really that big/impactful outside of SoCal…

But I could see Danny Elfman doing it, unless Lolla gets him instead

    and the plot thickens!
still dont like the short sets but sorta into the idea of 2 days where the schedules are the same. sort of like you get a test run and then either see what you missed, or see your favs a 2nd time.

I can go to Lollapalooza, a 4 day major festival, for less than that price lol

I have a friend that wants to do a road trip to that, but tbh I’d much rather do Riot

I truly do not understand the appeal of this festival for a person who still goes to shows and/or other festivals regularly. It's super pricey, doesn't have much in the way of "unique" gets, etc.

But I was thinking about it. And given how expensive My Chemical Romance resale tickets are? If they're your #1 reason for going, I definitely get it.

Definitely still focused on Riot, though every time I get drunk I keep going back to Shaky Knees and thinking about that one. There aren't a ton of bands I'd want to see there, but there's a solid 3-5 each day that I'd love to see and at least a few I'd watch and enjoy.

I kinda wish Riot would announce in April rather than May so I could do that if it looks more appealing. Haha.

and WWWY is already sold out. im fascinated by its meteoric rise, then taking a beating for a day or 2, to then adding a second day and selling out instantly. how was there this much fever pitch about this collection of bands that riot hasnt really capitalized on?? Maybe riot hasn't been genre-hyper specific enough to warrant the collective excitement of an entire genre fanbase. Though they got sizeable time in the public eye with the jawbreaker and misfits announcements, but still i think this went wider that either of those. i have 4 theories and its probably a combo of them all, plus things i havent thought of yet.
    1) its just a banger of aline up.
    2) omicron messed up a LOT of plans people had at a time we thought we were almost out of this thing, and this dropped right at the right moment to have something people got excited about again.
    3) that poster. something about the sticker looking collage is just straight up more exciting than a bunch of names in white letters, same font. i know other have done it, but it still really stands out.
    4) there is just always something going viral on social media, Wordle had its moment in the sun and this was the next thing to come along at the right moment. lol

i hope it succeeds cuz id like to try it out one year as i love an excuse to go to vegas, but im not budging from the riot band wagon

I'm not shocked at all that WWYF had the impact that it did. The line-up is stacked from top to bottom full of bands people care about that aren't represented by most major festivals. There's only a handful that will book most of these acts and in a lot of cases it's more of a "here's the 2 emo bands for this year so we can try to get those kids to come" thing than anything else.

So if you are currently or were in the past a fan of that Warped Tour pop-punk/emo/screamo/whatever thing? You were gonna be pretty hyped. And I think people forget just how massive that genre was at the time. From like, 2003 through 2006 that music was essentially "pop" in that it was the dominant form of rock music at the time on radio and MTV. So if you were in high school and college at the time, even if you've moved on? This is like a nostalgia bomb for you. And it's quite literally the only option.

I'm not sure any other festival could re-create what they did here. And I doubt it will have the same effect next year when they announce the line-up. People will probably be stoked, news outlets will cover it, but it won't dominate social media the way it did. The novelty/shock factor will have worn off for most people. I'll be real curious to see what they do next year because I'm struggling to see how you have another 65 bands without repeating every year...

And if I'm being totally honest, I wonder how something like this plays out over time. I feel like there's diminishing returns on nostalgia. It could be super successful for a few years and dwindle. But when you're booking 65 acts in a fairly niche genre (I know there's multiple genres in the mix, but I'm mostly just thinking of them as "Warped Tour bands" or whatever)... You only have so many headliner options before you start repeating and it stops feeling less special.

But RE: Riot, I think they haven't tried to "capitalize" on it because of what it is. It's a multi-genre, punk leaning festival. They'll book a stage or two of these acts over a weekend along with some hard rock, hip-hop, indie, 90s skate punk, alternative, maybe a bit of metal, etc. They don't seem to have any desire to cater to any one specific audience in this way.

WWYF is hyper targeted to a very specific type of person/music fan who isn't being marketed to by any other festival.
