With these movies the masses just want a cool sci fi action movie. They don’t understand that the Matrix is, first and foremost, a series about how love can very literally conquer all

It was fun and different. I wouldn’t consider it a masterpiece, but very happy for those that do.

That's because in the original trilogy that idea is relatively understated, whereas in this installment it is the central thesis.

Neo literally chooses what he is told is the destruction of the human race to try to save Trinity's life.

Love conquering all has been baked into the series since Trinity literally brought Neo back to life by telling him she loved him at the end of the first film.

This movie ruled. I hate every Wachowki movie since the first Matrix, so I guess you're on notice Lilly

I loved this. I know the meta approach won’t work for some but it was the perfect amount of fun and self aware for me. Loved seeing so many Sense8 actors pop up as well

Hey hey, this was pretty good! It felt like a pretty natural evolution for the most part. Machines teaming up with people is a nice development. Stoking fear and frustration as a means to power the Matrix was a good way to adapt the whole concept to the social media age. The explanation for what happened to the original Morpheus was a chefs kiss. That dude was so committed to the prophecies, of course he would be in denial that anything could change. I haven't looked around much, but I'm sure there's plenty of people upset about that. And while not at all subtle, I loved the digs at reboots and modern blockbusters (even if this movie doesn't quite escape convention).

I appreciated the smaller scale of the plot. I know there were larger stakes at hand, but at its core it was just a guy trying to save the one he loves.

Where it falters is in the action. The opening and closing sequences were solid and the dojo fight between new Morpheus and Neo was emotionally gripping, but everything the middle felt a little flat. There's nothing I here that comes close to the heights of the lobby scene in the first or the car chase in Reloaded.

I loved this so much. I hear the critique about the action, but it's just not the focus of this movie and wouldn't really fit in with where Neo is as a character.

I understand people being disappointed that this didn't feel like a Matrix movie with the action and visual language, but a lot of those people would be complaining if we just got another retread. I love how this is so different, but also feels like such a natural continuation.

re: the action, an acquaintance on a message board put it like this: a film without yuen woo-ping is not gonna live up to the ones with him

if i'm understanding correctly, chad stahelski worked on this one (as well as the previous films), which is why the action is still... pretty good

There are moments when it's good, but it often felt bland or cut and paste from any other action or superhero movie (which, considering how meta this movie is, could have been the point? But I doubt that). The train escape scene is interesting, because its filled with cuts and as a result doesn't feel super clear, which creates a disorienting effect that kind of matches Neo's state of mind in that moment. But the Merovingian fight scene is edited in a similar way and it just feels bland.

The quieter moments are where the movie really shines. Neo and Trinity's coffee shop conversation and their moment on the roof were both beautiful, loving scenes that do a better job expressing the characters love for one another than most of the scenes in the first three did.

It's not the choreography that's the problem with the action scenes, it's that they're all cut up way too much. The fights in the original trilogy all used longer takes and framed everything really clearly. In this movie they're all over the place.

I adore this movie but the way the fight scenes are edited is the worst part about it. The Wick movies have incredibly framed/edited fight scenes so it was weird that this didn't given Stahelski's involvement.

So I understand the criticism of the action not being as good, especially when most people when they hear a new matrix they think that we finally get to see some great kung-fu to show up all this trash CGI stuff we've been stuck with for years now.

However I wouldn't go as far to say the action was terrible - like I had fun with every action scene still, especially since all of them were a driving force to where the story was going next - which I found exciting and unpredictable.

On rewatch I took a closer look at the action scenes with this in mind, and I still think it's fun. And tbh I thought all the action was better in this than in most of the MCU movies... I know that's low hanging fruit and an easy target when talking about mainstream hollywood blockbuster filmmaking but when you have people screaming about how this movie looks terrible and all the action sucks but praise mediocre looking action in your typical Marvel movie, then I don't know what to tell you.

  18. The action was secondary to the heart of the film where I don't think has been the case previously, aside from maybe Reloaded and that has one of the best action sequences of the series. Nothing here quite stands out like that. I'm not complaining, I loved the movie, but I think it's fair to say the action was the weakest element here.

The bot bombs scene with Trinity's bike was great, though.

this was fine? neither as good or as bad as some have made it out to be. the first hour or so and the final thirty minutes of this rule. everything on Io - and especially whatever the fuck Jada was doing - did not work for me at all. and the RATM cover is a crime against humanity. but overall i had a fun time returning to this world and probably won’t think about this movie again other than that.

What’s wild about the RATM cover at the end is that it’s by the RATM cover band whose lead singer pissed on a guy on stage like two months ago

    lol, what.

I conceptually loved that this movie ended with that weird ass cover, tbh, but yeah, the track's not what I'd exactly call "good."

If you're talking about Brass Against, I was just reading about them the other day and I don't know if they're intended to be billed as an RATM cover band but they seem to cover multiple bands in their albums. I don't know why I'm pointing this out; it really doesn't add anything to the conversation, but I'm doing it anyway!
