First half of Silent Alarm is basically perfect. Second half isn't quite as good, but it's still awesome.

I’ve been away from this thread for a week and holy shit. 2022 starting out weird.

Also to add to that earlier earnest ‘90s alt-rock discussion, I think Gin Blossoms’s “Found Out About You” is one of the best songs of that decade. Just an absolutely no bullshit breakup song that you can tell comes from a raw pain. It’s a shame about Doug Hopkins.

I initially didn’t care for Bloc Party, even though I knew the singer was black. However, I did become a fan once I learned the singer came out as gay

I like how you can say things better than I'll ever be able to. I'm being dead serious, thank you.

Thanks for letting me know what I was saying, that never happens to PoC. I appreciate your help.

I legit can't figure out the multi quote thing and I know it makes me sub human. I'm sorry for that.

I think that's a reportable offense though, let JT know.

I think you are making something very simple ("I like this band") much more complicated than it actually is.

You're right sorry, I am being resistant to criticism that's fair.

You're also right on your latter point. I don't give white people enough credit to look past skin color when it comes to just about anything. I mean, have you seen the world?

Further, when I see a white person criticize art that involves PoC, I think it's totally fair of me to think "are they critical of this because of the person's race?" I think we can agree on this. So, why is it unreasonable to have the same suspicion when white people praise art that involves PoC?

I might be wrong but when I read your comments I'm getting the vibes of like...I want to live in a world that doesn't see color. Am I wrong?

  16. JM95

    hmmm

Should white people just not express any opinion on art that may involve a PoC? Would that make things easier for you?

I'm curious how your mind deals with the idea that many people genuinely like Bloc Party, but specifically only their first album or so, and the rest of their material is broadly considered average at best, if not outright bad.

Is it that their internalized white guilt can only go so far, that some music is just so awful that not even white people filled with white guilt can justify its existence?

I am, you're correct, and the anger towards me seems pretty reasonable, and I sort of feel bad not relenting.

I used to think the same thing when cancel culture became like a thing...like I was like why should I care if this artist is a bad human, separate the art from the artist, etc...eventually I came around to it (admittedly it took far far too long). Maybe that's why I won't shut up because, like when a band gets cancelled, we look beyond the art and have to consider other factors.

Note I am not in any way saying that my dumbass argument here is anywhere close to issues relating to cancel culture. Artists who are legit cancelled deserve it due to overt physical mental emotional financial harm they inflicted. I'm just explaining to you what may motivate me to look into issues beyond the music. and that's just me, if you or anyone think that's dumb or wrong of me, totally fair.

A lot of people do feel this way, yes. At least white people publishing writing on artist of color’s work

Have you seen the things folks have said to me here? Repeatedly being told to just leave and be quiet? I'm sure people have tried to ban me and others for sure have blocked me. As though PoC haven't tried to be silenced since forever? Especially for uncomfortable and bad opinions (side note: remember when "being comfortable with being uncomfortable" with race issues was a thing?)

The easiest thing for me here and in life would be to just shut the fuck up and accept the status quo.

  21. I’d argue that the tokenization of Kendrick Lamar has less to do with him being black and everything to do with the music he makes, which is sort of antithetical to the point we’re all getting riled up about haha. Like, there are a billion black rappers out there — why not them too? It’s because Kendrick made a couple of records that appeal to many people who don’t listen to a lot of hip hop, if at all, by doing things with the genre that were not only unique to the mainstream in 2015, but that actively established connections to genres that many unfortunately viewed as more worthwhile. The issue that those people largely don’t delve deeper into the genre is very real, but that’s pretty separate from the notion that people tokenize Kendrick simply for being black

That’s actually his second but agreed. Like dude just knew he had to make a perfect pop-funk album before it was time to go become a revolutionary, genre-less genius
