Do you have any proof that would lead you to believe people on this forum are only listening to artists who are POC/bands with POC members because of "wokeness"? I'd love to see some examples. Otherwise, you're just projecting about scenarios that you do not know to be true and that's just pointless.

 

It’s not “coming off” like you’re resisting criticism, you ARE resisting criticism. Most of your responses have been deliberately antagonistic, if not just retellings of your original post

I cannot see how I’m completely off on my observation about what you’re doing here — it may not be your first and foremost purpose for posting the way you are, but it is undeniably the negative reaction that comes from it. You can’t tell a white person they’re putting a black person on a pedestal simply because they’re black without also inferring that the black person is only being put on a pedestal simply because they’re black. Not to mention, neither of those things are even happening to begin with

I think instead of going after people who listen to POC artists/bands with POCs in them and assuming they are listening for malicious reasons your time might be better spent going after people who only listen to white musicians and helping elevate/promote POCs music but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

 

One thing I'd point out is that Bloc Party's debut album is almost 17 years old, which means a lot of people who love that album probably first heard it when they were kids or teenagers in 2005. I definitely don't think most of us were thinking "Man, this will make me look woke" when we were teenage dweebs loading tunes onto our first iPods.

I don’t think it’s some sort of hot take that white people have unconscious, underlying biases, whether they like it or not. That much is true. But your application here just doesn’t really make sense, especially when you consider all the bands who may have black members and still get ignored…or all the well known popular bands with solely white members.

If your point isn’t “people like Bloc Party because they’re being performative”, then you’re doing a really bad job of communicating it lol

I rarely even lurk this thread but felt like I should own up to listening to music by straight people to prove that I’m an ally in the fight against heterosexuality

 

I think there is some valid critique to be made when artists seem to get tokenized by white listeners. Like a while back I saw some decent takes from black individuals online regarding white ppl sort of fetishizing Kendrick Lamar as an "acceptable" crossover to rap without exploring other black rappers in the genre and being used as a "see I listen to music by black rappers too!" Thing. I'm not gonna try to repeat those takes from memory cause I would butcher their arguments and as someone who is not black i prob wouldnt represent those arguments as well. Idk about anything else being said in here or if that's the point trying to be made or any dynamics surrounding bloc party (i only know the Helicopter song ), but I think it can happen in some instances.


I did listen to some of that Turnstile album cause it was brought up in here and I had high hopes cause I liked the cute pink cloud album art but it wasn't rly my thing, tho I turned it off before it finished so if there was a sonic shift I didn't get to it

 

I tried Silent Alarm a while back and didn’t really care for it, but Helicopter is killer
