To be fair, we don't really know what is going to happen. Another variant could fuck the whole thing up. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed that that doesn't happen.

But all things staying equal, I've been reading and saying exactly what you pointed out here, the Omicron spike is coming soon and then we'll see a pretty huge drop in cases.

I suspect we'll continue to see tours cancelled acutely but new shows being announced for the spring/summer. I've said this before in a few different threads but I see no reason why working musicians should have to stop booking/announcing shows months from now based on the current situation. Hope for the best, expect the worst, and all that...

I wonder how difficult the practicality would be for artists to require masks be worn for entire shows?

It would be impossible in some areas and even of places with high compliance you’d have morons who would skirt around it. You can’t hire enough security to deal with that shit in a bigger club.

  11. In the SLS Discord yesterday, Dylan said that the TWY tour is still on as of now. Obviously that could change though.

It feels basically impossible unless it's for small bands whose fanbases are on board with idea. The Spanish Love Songs and Signals Midwest shows I went to last year had basically 100% masking the entire time, but those were exceptions.

  12. Maybe the beginning, but it wraps up at the very tail end of March, which is probably a reasonable bet.

when i saw the menzingers in october they requested everyone wear masks but as soon as the show started and a pit started going most people were just wearing them around their chins

It could work if the entire fanbase was willing to get behind it. But that's a really big "if." Especially when you factor in things like pulling your mask down to sip a drink, etc.

Self-policing among the crowd is the only way to get it done. It would honestly be near-impossible to enforce in most settings without having security lose their minds. (And really, don't we give show security guards too much authority as it is?)

Elton John’s arena tour is starting on the 19th. Would be shocked if that isn’t cancelled at this point.

I saw Quicksand back in October (400 cap venue, but it was only about half full) and there was a "masks must be worn at all times" policy. There were one or two security standing side-stage to enforce it, I guess. There was one dude standing near me whose mask kept getting pulled down to his chin because he was singing along and whatnot, and each time it dropped down, the security guys would start yelling at him to put it up, and the dude (who was also very drunk) just flipped them off and kept going about his business, but then at the end of the song, he'd pull it back up. If more than one person was like that at a show, it'd be a nightmare for everyone. It was sooo distracting to everyone, including the band, since we were all up in the front.

Yeah, that's a great example of why it's so difficult to (effectively) enforce without ejecting people. Although if that's the policy, that's the policy and they probably should be ejected... But then you'd probably have that same guy going to the bar, buying a beer just to hold it in his hands and lowering his mask for extended periods of time and if security called him on it he'd just take a sip.

And being from Boston, I can safely say that at any show in this fucking city it would certainly be more than one person pulling that kinda shit, unfortunately. Haha.

I know Phoebe Bridgers had a mask mandate on her last tour, and I remember it going over pretty well actually, but that's probably cause the whole crowd was gay teenage leftists.

Just transfer the point of view and respectfulness of Julien Baker's fans this past tour into every other artist's fan base and I'm sure it'd work

Yeah it’s not that hard but it depends on the artist and their fans. Julien was mentioned above but I saw Kississippi summer 2021 and there was a sign that said masks were required by the artist (this was during the period where our mask mandate was lifted too) and everyone there obliged the whole time.

  24. Literally 100% of people were masked at Foxing's release show here in StL in August. Not 99.5%, it was seriously all several hundred people, I walked around a fair amount during opening acts. And I think they didn't even require it just asked people to.

It's all driven by who the fanbase is
