i dont really pay attention to zones. i'm usually just trying to go as fast as i can. it's something i need to work on.

got a pair of nike vaporflys for christmas but they were a size and a half too small so i gotta wait on the exchange :verysad:

Considering starting a running streak for 2022. Might actually start on NYE since that will make the 40th day of the streak coincide with my 40th birthday. I figure if I make it that long I will be happy and also more likely to try and continue it for the full year.

Also, I'm not really sure what happened to me recently, but my pace pretty suddenly got a minute per mile faster. I've never been very fast, and just in November I was consistently averaging 9-minute miles and really happy with that, but over the last few weeks I've been averaging 8-minute miles (over 6-8 mile distances) and even occasionally getting as fast as 7:30/mile.

i’m setting a goal for 1k miles, which seems reasonable

looks like i'll be around 30 miles short of my 1,500 mile goal for this year. try it again next.

ha, I’ll be a little short of the same goal. I’m at 1,477 right now and was scheduled to run today, tomorrow and Friday but I’m down with Covid-lite or something today and who knows how I’ll be tomorrow. Even if I did those three runs I’d be 12 or so short. Oh well.

more important to me was running 285 days this year.

Had been debating the last few weeks which marathon I wanted to sign up for to complete in March and went with one in Des Moines, IA since I can drive there (cheaper than flights) and the hotel was like 1/3 of what Knoxville, TN prices were.

no offense to Iowa but kind of want to get “less talked about states” out of the way or at least mixed in with some “fun” states as I begin to work my way through running a marathon in every state. I already know Hawaii will be the last state of course but trying to figure out a 10-15 year plan for the rest and when each state actually has them.

I started down that path in the late 00's and got through 10 marathons pretty quickly but then life and kids got in the way and I've only done 4 since. Now that my kids are older and in school though, trying to get back to it and get at least one done in 2022.

i remember as soon as I started the Madison Marathon (Wisconsin) I thought “this is such a cool way to see a city, I wanna do this in more of them”. On top of just falling in love with running, being able to see a city or national/state park that way is awesome too and something not a lot of people get to experience. I kind of am tempted to get a go-pro for the races but I know I’d probably never go back and watch them and as long as my memory is ok I can do with that lol

best of luck getting back into it in 2022! I honestly can’t imagine having a “normal life” of wife and kids on top of what training requires. All the behind the scenes stuff that people don’t see that takes up an awful lot of time. Like, weekend long runs can be a 3-6 hour total process! And week after week?! Always incredible for parents and/or people with busier jobs than I have that can stick with it.

Thanks! That was kind of my thought process when I started it too. I started in Chicago, where I lived at the time, and did that in October '07 then did Boston, Nashville, St. Louis, Indy, Detroit, Madison, Cleveland, Duluth, and Austin (December '11) over the next 4+ years. Since then I've done Pittsburgh, New York, Asheville, and Louisville which was almost 5 years ago at this point (spring of 2017) and the only one since I've had kids. I also had twins to start and then another kid 2 years later, which was a lot to add on.

Early on it was easy because I was young and just wouldn't let myself get out of shape so I could just keep going - I would take it relatively easy for a few weeks after each race and then just get started on the next. Later on I just got busier with work and life and especially traveling to different races got harder.

I was able to find a training schedule that worked for me though where I would do one day of intervals, one day of tempo, long runs on the weekends, and strength training the other days. That was also when I got in the habit of getting up early and getting my workouts in first thing in the morning.

That’s a wrap on 2022 running for me! How’d everyone end up for the year?

I’ve never used Strava, always thought about dabbling in it since I like the charts and graphs and whatnot but ever since I got my Coros watch in March I just use that and during the summer usually run without my phone so Strava wouldn’t count everything for me.

right now my first super simple goal is to run any distance at all tomorrow. Last few runs I’ve done a run at midnight to break in the new year and won’t do that this year but just hoping I’m feeling ok enough to go for a super slow jog in the morning that won’t kill me. My symptoms of flu or covid or whatever are lessening so I’m hoping I can at least do something tomorrow.

Personal growth on the first day of 2022!

I would have loved to have gone for a run today, even if just for a mile since it’s supposed to be a run day and to kick off the new year on a good note. But, I still feel like shit and I’ve been running enough to know that quantity doesn’t overcome quality. Sure, I could go out for a mile and it would probably be a 20 minute mile but “skipping” today will not kill my ability to run a marathon in March. Hell, doing that might even delay my recovery and honestly if it wasn’t New Year’s Day there would be no thought to running but I’m still a 12 year old at times who thinks that shit matters lol.

Fine, don’t come run with me. That’s my next half, assuming this is the Covenant Health one in March. The first half of this race is BRUTAL, so I wasn’t so sure I wanted to commit to a full (even though I live/train here) just yet so close to my full last November.

About to go out on my first run if 2022/only second run since my race. 3 miles to loosen up.

I’m making the jump to Strava from Nike Run Club and why tf does it need background app refresh on?

Hmm, very good to know about the first half! I always investigate the incline and map layouts and whatnot and read reviews if I can find them, but having someone who lives there say it’s all caps brutal means more than just some random saying it lol.

the downside of some of these bigger city races is that I have to start planning for them / remember to book a hotel like a year in advance.

Austin marathon is usually in February, so as soon as the 2022 one is done and sign up for 2023 is allowed, I gotta jump on that for the lower cost of the race itself and for the hotels which will get booked fast. There’s also the “Grandma’s Marathon” in Duluth, MN in June that sells out super quick that I have a reminder already set to book race/hotel this June for next June. It’s crazy - and I’m assuming that’s why hotel prices are so high since it’s “only” three months away (and a “better” city than Des Moines (sorry Iowa) so it can charge more.

Yeah, almost all of the elevation is in the first four miles, then has a dagger hill at the eleven mile mark. It’s kinda amusing how flat the back thirteen are in comparison.

I’m debating trying for New York via the lottery for 2023. I want to do it when COVID won’t wreck it.

I just crossed the year mark for my running streak. Total miles ended up at 2301, daily average of 6.30. Climbed 96,417’. I’m continuing on to 500. This has definitely been the most challenging thing I’ve ever attempted. Especially in NV dealing with all four seasons. Ran most of the year in Brooks Launch 8’s.

We had crazy rain storms all night and most of the morning, but there was a break while my wife was taking the kids to school so I was able to sneak in a mile and keep my running streak alive at 4 whole days (13 miles total so far) ! It's 10% of my 40-day goal so I'm just going to take it as a win.

i set my strava goal for 2,000 miles this year. didn't even hit my 1500 goal last year so i might have gone out a little over ambitious. fuck it.

My run streak has a 5K minimum. There have been days where it hasn’t been easy to find the time. I am considering reducing it to 1 mile after 500.
