My mom and I had talked about seeing West Side Story for her birthday next week, I know it didn’t do well at the box office but I’m shocked that it’s basically out of theaters here within a month of release.

that’s such a boring argument for me. I’m fine with longer movies. Just make them earn their length.

That’s the point of the tweet.. most movies these days don’t earn the 2+ hour runtime.

Comedies and action movies, for example, should be around 90.

Before this becomes a whole thing, every movie should be as long as it justifies itself to be. No specific movie or genre should be assigned a minimum or maximum length. That's it.

Roger Ebert said no good movie is too long and no bad movie is too short

Runtimes shouldn’t be exclusive to genres. Imagine if action films like Avengers or Matrix films were limited to under 2 hours. It wouldn’t work.

  11. If avengers was 90 minutes I would be 100x more likely to watch it

Even if it’s only by 5 or 10 minutes, a lot of movies are too long

  16. Space movies are usually too long

I forget which director said it, but you only get one space movie, so you might as well go for it.

  19. Like who told Michael Bay to make Armageddon 2.5 hours long

if directors earn their runtime, i have no problem with a lengthy movie. reds is over three hours and flies by. licorice pizza is 2+. theres absolutely no reason for every blockbuster and movies like don’t look up to always be 150 minutes though

Yeah Tarantino and Marty can make movies whatever length they want because they almost always earn their length.

I feel like I end up thinking a movie could’ve been shorter a lot more often than longer.

  25. James Cameron is making sequels to Pocahontas in Space. Granted, that is an oversimplication of the plot, Avatar is undeniably a very influential technological achievement in cinema.
Dune is also getting sequel(s?) but it's only covered the first half of the book so far apparently (didn't read it) and imo its length is totally justified
idk what point I'm making. Just making observations, I guess.
Another observation: as blockbuster films are getting (arguably) unjustifiably longer, it seems like some filmmakers are also making the transition to TV for longer storytelling.
