I actually largely agree, which is where VR comes in.

I was talking to someone last week about VR. The conversation veered towards stuff like Photogrammetry tech getting to a point where the visuals genuinely resemble life, and art will be made that evokes empathy and understanding more effectively than anything in any media now.

I informed them that VR is fine as is, Heavy rain already exists and FF7 has the most heartwrenching scene in all of fiction. They said some bullshit about videogame stories being escapist and melodramatic and insinuated I wasn't forward thinking enough. The nerve!

Melodramatic escapism is perfect for video games lol.

Exactly! And they were all like, Because of tech limitations interactive experiences are still mostly an animation medium so it wouldn't make sense for stuff that only works as live action to exist right now. But as tech improves the storytelling potential will grow, etc

They still think the medium hasn't realized its potential yet and lots of stuff we're hyped over rn will seem cheesier in the future. Fuckin normies, man.

Yeah I think there will always be new opportunities to do new kinds of stuff with games but that doesn't diminish what games have already been able to do.

Actually taking control of a character and being in another world is something you can't do in any other medium. Some people may not value that kind of escapism very highly but I certainly do. Storytelling is different in video games but can be more rewarding in different ways due to the level of engagement.

They said they still like videogames but wanna see more varied and challenging stories and expression like we get in movies and TV, and even though we sometimes get that, a lot of stuff praised by gamers is cornier than many accept etc.

They didn't realize everything's subjective and game stories can have TONS of writing and voice acting, and graphics are already pretty detailed so I think they had a dumb take.

Anywho, back to my Detroit: Become Human sesh now, peace ^_^

Yeah I already have TV and movies for that stuff. I can't get the kind of journeys I get in Final Fantasy or Zelda in tv or movies where part of the narrative is my personal exploration of a new world. There's a lot of care and thought put into those things. Or the kind of lore based storytelling of Bloodborne/Dark Souls.

It seems like they abandoned it, part of me is hoping Valve will let them finish it one day.

I'm guessing Valve is pretty mum on things?

Valve is worse than Apple, especially since they aren’t traded publicly.

Such a weird, backwards view that ignores decades, even centuries of progression in other fields. Have books reached their peak, has music? Has television? Has movies? Have comic books? Has any artistic medium hit a wall where nothing can get any better than it already is? The answer is no and it will always be no. Otherwise why do people keep writing new books, making new movies, tv shows, albums etc. ? New ideas and new people creating those ideas, will always come around and build upon and improve upon what came before and video games are no different.

also such a weird claim to make when video games are heavily tied to tech which is the fastest progressing industry in the history of human kind. tech advances at an unprecedented rate and it’s not going to stop anytime soon, thus video games will have plenty of room to progress further than they already have. VR is one avenue of that for sure.

Well, I'd say the answer actually is that we don't know if anything has peaked or not

I'd definitely argue that at the very least the AAA space has plateaued and homogenized quite a bit.

These are all subjective mediums, so when we're talking about peaks, what are we really talking about? Technically peaked? Creatively peaked? Is it possible for a consensus on any of it?

Video games especially are hard to compare. Like, people that think Witcher 3 is a better contender for greatest game of all that time than Tetris and vice versa are so far apart from each other that they might as well be talking about different mediums.

the AAA space is only one part of the industry and innovation has happened enough in the indie space to make any “video games are as good as they’re gonna get” argument completely obsolete and quite frankly embarrassing but that’s just my view which may be seen as harsh, whatever, I just honestly think it’s stupid

No, it’s not possible, which is why it’s pointless to declare that a wall has been hit and things are as good as they’ll ever be. I mean the examples given were Skyrim and the Witcher 3 which came out 4 years apart, and ghost of tsushima which came out what, last fucking year or the year before? So from Skyrim to GOT (which I haven’t played) with other examples in between clearly there has been some sort of progression in quality and in another two or three years there will be even more games we can point to as the “peak” of video games, and even more another two or three years after that, and so on, and so forth, because it literally never stops so long as people are continuing to create. It’s literally the same for every other artistic medium
