I enjoyed this but I definitely need to watch it again lol. So much I didn't understand.

Like what the heck was going on in that opening scene. Or why Smith helped Neo. Or what's going on with the Frenchman. I couldn't understand anything he was saying except the word "sequel" lol.
Also someone already mentioned it, but I was confused at the whole unplugging Trinity/plugging in Bug scene.

They used Bugs as a bridge to get Trinity out of the Matrix hookup from the pod and into a Matrix hookup connected to the ship. They couldn’t just disconnect Trinity’s mind from the Matrix when they went to move her body, it would’ve killed her.

    So Trinity was in Bugs?

Yeah Bugs’ mind maintained the connection to the Matrix while they unplugged her from the pod. It’s why Trinity was flickering into Bugs during that sequence, their DSI’s were overlapping.

So we see Bugs get jacked in, but she would have disconnected before they got her body back to the ship though.

The flying stingray bird robot is connected to the ship’s Matrix feed. They connect Bugs to Trinity’s wire. Then they disconnect Trinity from the pod. Then they connect Trinity to the robot. Then they disconnect Bugs.

I liked this. Some of the dialogue wasn’t so great and the tone felt a little off at times, but overall I thought it was an interesting continuation of the story.

If this is referring to Shepherd, he’s in the Wachowskis’ sense8 on Netflix. Only thing I know him from.

They looked like they were having a blast, especially the new actors, but the script was really angry—that’s more what I meant by fun. At times you can almost hear them saying “Isn’t this what you wanted?” You can tell Lana was strong-armed into doing this sequel when it was the last thing she probably wanted to do. Part of it may be knowing the feedback many other Wachowski productions have received—always compared back to The Matrix. You can see it reflected in Thomas Anderson trying to make a new game, but WB forcing him back to the Matrix. “Meta” is going to get overused with this film, and at times it was almost a bludgeoned “GET IT?!” with some of the callbacks, but I firmly believe a lot of script reads very angry.

When I think of “fun” Matrix moments, I think Neo vs Smith in the subway, the elevator lobby rescue of Morpheus, the car chase, getting into the Architect, etc. This movie didn’t have anything like the caliber of set piece found particularly in the first two films.

It’s why I said it was a fascinating movie; she took exquisite care to still try and craft an important story despite clearly (from pre-production comments and other things said since the original trilogy) wanting to do something else.

The more I think about the movie, the more I like it. It reaches to be more than an unnecessary yet harmless fun legacy sequel (Jurassic World, as mentioned) or an extremely offensively bad legacy sequel (JW:FK), and I appreciate that a lot. I don’t think it quite lands tonally, but I’m interested enough to see where it would go if the sisters WANT to tell more.

Forgot to say last night, I assumed it was because Neo and Trinity are both the “Ones” of this new Matrix. Since it was built around them.

It's definitely possible I had their motivations conflated in my mind, but I feel like for a long time following the release the original trilogy both sisters were staunchly against ever revisiting it. Even as recently as 2016, a Matrix reboot was being put forwarded as something no one involved in the original trilogy would want to do. But that also lines up with when their parents passed away.

The movie itself even seems to suggest in the beginning that WB would've gone forward without them (the AVClub review notices this, too) involved when Smith is introducing the new game. So, and we'll probably never know, it could be a mixture of both motivations--process grief and retain ownership of something that could've been taken away from them.

Thanks for sharing these articles, because it helps frame the movie in another level. Returning to important characters to process grief is certainly a beautiful way to create a piece of art. You can even see it in the choice of how this Matrix is constructed: this version has "a mother and a father"--"what happens when they're not in the construct anymore?" is the final question of the film, even!

Related to this, and someone can double-check this easily enough (I'm at work or I would), but I'm pretty sure it still said "Directed by The Wachowskis" in the credits last night, because I was surprised by it not just being Lana.

I don’t take that so much as literally “WB will make another Matrix with or without you” so much as a comment on how the culture machine will devour and defang everything whether you like it or not
