I mean, Manchin is right that the bill as written is kind of absurd in the way that it attempts to cut the overall cost of the bill. Like, we would be funding universal pre-k for 3 years before it expires. But the lack of self-awareness is astonishing: literally the only reason it's written that way is because Manchin himself set an arbitrary spending limit and refused to raise taxes on the wealthy to even Obama-era levels!

 

Also this. The dude who wrote the fucking Constitution thought the senate idea that eventually passed was fucking horrible and would be a huge mistake!

Not that I disagree with the sentiment, but isn't cutting off PUA/PEUC benefits to people who were already getting them *unrelated* to new unemployment claims?

Or is the ability to make UA claims tied to the kicking people off?

I understand where these takes are coming from but you are fooling yourself if you actually think if you tied the bills together that Manchin wouldn’t have just killed both bills with his main concerns being inflation and deficit. He always had the leverage and that was the problem.

 

Let him kill both bills then. And then drive the messaging home that Joe Manchin alone is the person responsible for your government not passing bills to make your lives meaningfully better.

 

I would love nothing more than to someone ask Kamala again, and not let her weasel her way out of it this time.

Because it sure feels like Joe Manchin has all the power and Biden has very little (and likes it?!)

 

Unfortunately, this messaging would only truly land if Schumer forced a vote. But he won’t, because they all know it’s not *really* just Manchin.

 

Whether it’s both or just BBB he killed we can still try to drive the message that he is stopping the government from doing more good. If anything, this way makes it harder for the media to blame progressives because this is literally just Manchin saying no to the content of the bill. If you make him kill both bills then you risk the media turning around and saying “well Manchin was willing to vote for the BIF but progressives wanted both at the same time so it’s their fault”

 

This is all so dumb. The dumbest shit to argue week in and week out.

 

When will the media stop reporting on this political theater like it actually means anything. The White House can put out statement after statement like this, the media will eat this shit up like “ZOMG!!” And the WH will go back to doing nothing
