Or just don't see the hype behind a manufactured pop star? Purchased playlist spots, paid TikTok campaigns, never actually performed a live set for a crowd....her team is killlllllling it! Kudos to them for selling mediocrity this well.

Her entire team deserves every industry award possible.

A lot of acts have a paid TikTok campaign and purchase playlist spots, doesn't meant the music is going to resonate. Even if she is a manufactured star, people are obviously responding to the music and that's all that matters. People caring about authenticity pretty much died in the mid-00's.

Authenticity in art matters, I apologize if believing in that makes me a 31yo boomer.

Not sure why music became an area where authenticity became passé. Plenty of pop artists maintain authenticity (Robyn, Rina, Lorde, Marina, Jessie Ware, Charli, etc) while breaking new barriers and exploring unique sounds.

Her record, sonically, provided nothing new to the pop landscape in 2021. Also, how many claims of plagiarism can you have against you before it sticks (Elvis C, Paramore, Taylor, Hole)? It stops becoming a coincidence after awhile.

As the resident metal loving asshole who hates pop music here and hasn't listened to an ounce of her music...who cares? If people are resonating behind her whether due to some combination of the quality of her music or the engine she has behind them, then good for her. Pay for play and music marketing have been things forever, and I'm sure she'll have at least a month of rehearsals to work the kinks out of being a live performer before she hits the stage. If the kids like it, then it's gotta have some point to it.

now back to the new malignant altar album.

I like a lot of those acts you listed but they all have big machines behind them/working with them (management, producers, songwriters, etc.) I have no skin in the game regarding Olivia Rodrigo but I tend to dismiss the term "manufactured" unless there was a team that completely pushed her to make music.

They're def not indie artists doing it on their own, I agree with that. Just nothing feels authentic from Olivia, maybe it's the Disney background, but it just feels like a cash grab by a team.

I mean...it's hard to make a cash grab out of someone who wasn't established on this level yet. She's so young, she'll probably start listening and being influenced by different types of music by the time she's in her late 20's/early 30's. Her success is a bit strange in that it covers both teen hysteria and 30-something dudes which is a rarity.

Absolutely, the fandom is just bizarre amongst older people. But go off if that's what you're into.

    Things have changed.

Let the kids have their fun. I kinda roll my eyes at people saying they're going to "KMS" because they didn't get tickets and how they're screaming and vomiting and crying at the same time, but to each their own. It's not hurting anyone.

I'm truly surprised they didn't get her slots at Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lolla, etc....would've made a ton of sense giving her experience in front of those crowds and building demand for an arena tour with more material.

The thing about “manufactured” pop stars is that there are hundreds of pop artists who have had the same exact resources put behind them and yet they never make it this big. You have to give at least a little credit to the ones who do.

Also any pop star who gets kids to pick up a guitar is good in my books

I thought Olivia was a big cash grab at first too then I checked out her album and I’m actually really really into her. I think she put out a fantastic album and it changed my mind after first brushing her off with driver license.

Yeah, Olivia's lyrics are almost earnest to a fault in that slightly cringe, femcel way, so I initially wrote her off as juvenile sadgirl shit, but after listening to her album a few times it became clear that her instincts as a songwriter are incredible, and it doesn't feel monotonous because the styles are switched up routinely over the tracklisting. I definitely think she deserves the success she has.

I don't know if it's "bizarre" so much as people who are very on-line attempting to maintain some sort of Internet relevancy. I'm sure there's a certain segment who legitimately enjoy her work, and pop music more broadly, but there's definitely a "I don't usually like pop music but... I like this!" vibe to the whole thing with a lot of them.

That being said? It's still not harming anybody. And there is an earnestness to the desire to connect with something that makes you feel younger. So... Whatever. It's interesting to see an artist connect with so many different people for so many different reasons.

SOUR is one of my top albums of the year. I really connected to the lyrics because they pretty much read as my exact thoughts when I went through similar things in a past relationship. I wish this album had been there for me a couple of years ago. Yes, I’m a 20 year old girl who loves pop music, so others may see me as her prime target audience. But, it’s impressive that so many different age groups and people in different walks of life relate to the album, whether it’s from their past or something they’re going through right now. I understand if she may not be someone’s thing, but I wouldn’t write her off, especially since she’s only 18 and has so more growth awaiting her. I’m sorry if this sounds like a jumbled mess haha.

Do you care if art in general is inauthentic? Visual, performance, film, etc? Or is music the outlier?

Honestly, just trying to understand this more. As a musician myself I’ve always found the authenticity to be what shines through with an artist, not the polished hook.

But art is subjective and this is all ultimately a moot point.

I am a musician as well, but I still think Olivia’s albums slappps.
