That's two top 20 teams and was at the beginning of the season.

But fine lol. If they compete against Ohio State THEN they've made their case

Well id say it helps with the concept of auto bids being a thing. I have zero issue with Utah being a 12 seed and going against Alabama.

They’re also like 9-1 since changing QBs, Utah is good as hell

Yeah but look at the NFL. You could have a couple losses to some shit teams and still be a strong competitor in the playoffs.

    The rivalry is back on

nooo they still have 3 losses in a 14 game season! they can be 3 good losses, but it’s still 3 losses! if they beat Ohio St, then they had an awesome season as PAC-12 champs but weren’t in the running to be the single best team in the nation, which is what winning a playoff implies

my favorite thing about college football is how every game in the regular season matters and that’s the only sport you can say that for. 1 loss and you’re teetering on thin ice, 2 losses and you’re out. big playoff turns September football from “oh wow Georgia/Clemson and Ohio St/Oregon are all but elimination games for the losers of those games” to the “eh, none of this really matters but I guess it’s entertaining” level of pre-New Years college basketball

I don’t like the NFL parallel quite as much because talent is much more evenly distributed in the NFL — the difference between a “bad” and a “good” team in the NFL is relatively minuscule whereas the elite teams are a LOT better than the pretty good teams. Betting lines in the NFL hits 2 scores when the best teams play the worst teams, while a betting line against *top 10 teams* this year was -20 (and OSU easily covered)

Nah. It'd be far more entertaining to see a team like Utah, who struggled in the beginning and clearly put it all together, have an opportunity to prove they're one of the best teams. Georgia/Clemson being an elimination game is stupid and part of the reason why teams regularly schedule cupcakes - why would you risk a loss in a system that has no nuance and absolutely no room for error. Gimme that sweet sweet 12 or 16 team playoff.
