This is what has been said for every new coach of USC since I was a kid and in my 30+ years watching college football no one outside of Pete Carroll has been able to accomplish this.

I would disagree with this. Powerhouse football being good is good only for those programs. That does very little/nothing to help small conferences/programs.

Memories are nice, but that's all they are. Prestigious

Michigan and USC have been consistently disappointing. This is the first year UM finally looks how it probably should’ve.

Lincoln Riley is a lot different than Clay Helton/Ed Orgeron/Steve Sarkisian.

His offense is innovative, he’s a great recruiter, and he’s been to the CFB Playoff. I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t get USC there quickly.

I’ll believe USC is back to being a powerhouse when I see it, a coaching hire doesn’t just fix a program that’s been floundering since Carrol.

Skeptical of any coach that’s looked at as a panacea like this

Also the whole “x sport is just better when x teams that were good at this point in time that I remember as being significant are good again” thing is so silly to me lol.

Like why? Maybe I’m just hardwired to hate the institutions in sports but I get zero enjoyment out of seeing Texas or USC or the Knicks or Lakers or Cowboys or Yankees be good

  7. It’s been less than 24 hours since the news broke and we’re already seeing top recruits shift their eyes to USC. Those things did not happen when Helton, Orgeron etc were hired.

I have no real connection to west coast teams, but for some reason I enjoy seeing Pac 12 teams play well.

It’s not like they’ve been recruiting stiffs for the last 5 years they had top 5 classes in ‘17 & ‘18 and top 10 last year

They got the #2 recruit in the entire nation last year

  11. And had shitty coaching. Now the recruiting is seemingly going to be even better, and with a legit coach.

  12. There’s also been some moderately bad luck with injuries. But that’s not a good excuse for how poor they’ve been overall.

An Oregon fan doesn't think this is a great hire?

    Shocking

The atmosphere in those stadiums when those teams are great is unbeatable.

If you have powerhouses from all over the country instead of just SEC and ACC schools in the playoff every year, it just creates a better environment in college football.

    The rivalry is back on

I agree to an extent with college football — I don’t care about Texas, USC, or Michigan per se, but there are things that would be good for college football as a whole that those teams would facilitate

    1) it’d be good for college football if the PAC-12 could produce a team or two that is a legitimate title contender. I don’t really care if that’s USC, Oregon, Utah, or any of the other teams, but USC feels like among the most realistic options

    2) it’s good for college football if Ohio St doesn’t run unchecked through the Big 10 year after year. Again, if Penn St, Wisconsin, etc do that job, then great, but if Michigan can go toe to toe with them, all the better

    3) ditto for the ACC and Clemson

    4) we have that a little bit more for Alabama in the SEC with Georgia, LSU, and Auburn, but if someone can full on topple the dynasty, that’d be great, and sure why not Texas or OU?

I’m down for USC not sucking. As an Oregon fan they need more marquis matchups within conference especially with the SEC expansion. This move by Riley is very good news for the Pac 12 as a whole.

All very true. He also inherited an OU program that was (and has been) ready made and now he has to rebuild USC, which is something only one coach in nearly 50 years was able to do.

    Duh it’s a great hire,
I question the assumption that making a great coaching hire just fixes the entire football program and they’re gonna be a powerhouse just by dint of hiring him

I'm with you that at OU, he was "born on third base" as Harbaugh would say...

I don't think USC has to be rebuilt. They have great players and they will always be able to get them. Great coaching, especially offensively, makes all the difference for them. It's not a dumpster fire like Texas.

USC wins the west coach with recruiting and they've dipped into Texas lately. If Riley has success, he'll be able to get some of the best players in the southeast too which shakes things up. You start getting some kids from Florida (like Riley was doing at OU) and it's on...

2 of the 4 top QBs in the nation were from USC's backyard. They could definitely be back very soon.

That said, I'd love to see team other than USC/Texas/Michigan be good. USC is literally just the Lakers. Fuck em.

Right, but this has been the case for decades and no one has been able to do it aside from one dude.

Personally I'd love to see Riley fail to make USC any better than he made Oklahoma

Putting Helton and Riley on even footing is odd.
