Would love a Damage session, Appreciation is one of my all time favourite JEW songs. Such an underrated banger of a track.

Wish I could go back and kick myself for not getting into this band, more than any other, when I started getting into the scene. For some reason prior to Bleed American I hadn’t heard much about them. I listened to some Braid, Promise Ring and others but never came across Clarity. Still haven’t seen this band live and planning to address that ASAP. Hoping they do a B market tour soon. I passed on seeing Futures in full a few years back. Reading Sellout it’s just crazy to see how these guys paved the way for so many other bands.

Futures and Clarity Phoenix Sessions are incredible. As others have mentioned, it would be neat if they would continue this with some of the other albums such as CTL, Bleed American, and Damage.

my hot take is jim is a better lyricist than anyone in this thread and probably knows what he’s doing thanks for agreeing with my scorcher

He's a way better lyricist than even most lyricists but still sometimes drops the ball a bit

"Delivery" is my favorite song on Surviving but its the wrong word in the context ("from the rest I patiently request delivery"), you don't request delivery from something, you request deliverance from something, which wouldn't sound near as good unfortunately so sometimes you wing it with what fits the song, but it still itches my brain every time I listen lol

If I could get over The Dangerous Summer using the word “misleaded” in one of their choruses (read: not a word!), you can get over Jim saying “delivery” instead of “deliverance.”

honestly Pain's chorus might be my least favorite lyrics, even though I love the song

  9. If you asked me what Jimmy song had the word “delivery” in it, I’d literally never be able to tell you. I don’t know all the lyrics to any song and I’m completely fine with it. Haha.

Jim seems like a super smart, articulate, well-read guy - I'm sure he knows that grammatically it would be 'deliverance' as opposed to 'delivery', but 'delivery' sounds better for the song, and it's a song, not an essay that he's gonna be graded on. It sounds great and you know what he's getting at. It's not like he says 'punkin' or 'nucular' or anything like that.

I was just thinking about how, based on their 3 year cycle, we should be getting a new album next year.

My favorite tiny Jimmy Eat World lyric thing to obsess over that most normal people wouldn't even notice, is that comparing the album version of Dizzy and the acoustic version, I think "Do you hear the conversation we talk around?" is an *INFINITELY* better line/lyric than "Do you hear the conversation we talk about?"

They both work, they are both grammatically correct, the one they went with rhymes better with the slightly changed line before it - but the acoustic version of the line is loaded and poetic and just oozes that feeling of a deteriorating relationship where communication has fully broken down. One line reflects the deafening silence of all the conversations you are too afraid to have or it is too late to have, while the other line just seems to be the person singing saying 'Do you hear what we talk about?' It's SO straight forward and the other line is gloriously evocative.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

yeah "talk around" is a much much better lyric in that context. also always been curious why he changes "I'm calling out" to "I'm asking now" in the second and third choruses - it's not really any worse or better, just an interesting change

  19. To me, the production absolutely makes Damage what it is. I adore that record front to back. Lyrically it feels so raw that the typical polished sound they have wouldn’t fit right in my opinion. That record feels like a person who just went through the ringer, sat in a room and just bashed out all their feelings on a guitar - the album is pure catharsis. Such an underrated gem in their catalog.

Damage could still sounds little less flat, even if it’s less polished.

I have always loved Damage, and the production has never bothered me, but for the people who it does - have you checked out the iTunes Session they did from 2013? To me, it's like a little sample of the album with different production. You get 30% of the album recorded a little differently. I think the Damage songs all sound great, particularly the first two.

I don't really hear the production / sound issues that people have with Damage, but I can't imagine a fan of the band thinking the songs aren't there. Those songs go toe-to-toe with any of their other albums.

Damage was my first record from the band, with I Will Steal You Back being my favorite song of theirs for about 3 years, but now it's my least favorite record from the Clarity - Surviving stretch.

I’m not a fan of the production of Damage, but it doesn’t bother me nearly as much as it did when it came out. Some top notch JEW songs on that thing.

Given the supremely high quality of these Phoenix Sessions, there's a pretty good chance we get something akin to a refreshed version of Damage in the near future, no...?
