Goddamnit now you people have me going back and watching reaction clips to scenes on YouTube. It was mind blowing how popular the series was in the moment (everyone in my 40 person office watched the final season and talked about it at great length the rest of the week - like what fucking show could do that?) and looking back to see bars crowded, gymnasiums and shit with all sorts of people coming together to watch GOT. And then hundreds of videos with hundreds of thousands of views of people watching other people react to the show. Shit was insane.

That communal experience is what makes me miss watching most shows week to week. Like, just imagine how crazy “Squid Game” would have been with fan theories, etc., if it wasn’t immediately binge-able.

Red Notice was better than Bright. That's all I'll give it lol

I'm sure in two weeks I'll hardly remember anything about it. After Black Adam, I'd wish the Rock would just take a couple years off lol. Love the guy but man I'm burnt out on him

That was actually an incredible episode. Jonathan Pryce was great as the High Sparrow. The music was fantastic and then you had the tension of Lancel trying to blow out the fuse and then BOOM wildfire blows everything up

After so many great performances and the slow burn it just devolved into sheer lunacy at the end. Idk.

I see the merit in this but I don’t miss all the wait and fan theories in hindsight. Just added to the ultimate disappointment. Like how did nothing more happen with faceless men? What a waste.

Invasion on Apple TV sucks. Three episodes in & I’m quitting. This comes from someone that typically eats up anything with aliens.

I will always prefer discussing an episode of a show over:

“Hey did you hear about this (likely Netflix) show?”
“Yeah, I watched it all last week.”
    “Okay. Welp!”

I can see both sides, although this is honestly a really poor argument. You don't have anything to talk to someone about after you finish a series? I've had plenty of meaningful conversations with people about shows, even years after they've been over.

That being said, I did also have a lot of meaningful conversations about GOT during the show, and I can understand why someone would prefer having that vs. immediate knowledge of events. You can still speculate about what happens next season, but that's a small concession.

The problem is that anything you come up with will almost surely be better than what the writers come up with. Circling back to those same conversations, we'd always blue sky about what we thought for sure was going to go down, and it turned out to be some contrived garbage.

I still think at this point in my life, I prefer having the choice to digest a show at my leisure and discuss what happens vs. trying to figure out what's going to happen only to end up disappointed. I mean, it's a time commitment, right? Let me choose what time I want to commit.

I definitely hate when all the episodes drop at once, I watch things very slowly and can't binge, like watching 10 episodes in 2 or 3 weeks would take work from me haha
I also think it takes some of the magic away from things, versus it being an event like it's Sunday it's time for my stories

Yeah I get it both ways but at this point in my life I don’t know that I socialize enough to talk with folks about a weekly show. The shows I discuss the most with people today tend to be the shows that are already complete like The Wire and The Sopranos anyway.
I am also a glutton and love a good weekend binge.

It is good to digest certain shows though. Like I’m glad I watched mad men weekly for the most part. The Wire I did binge but I also rewatched it 5 or 6 times to appreciate the little or subtle things.

I said this in the Succession threads at week but I find that I do enjoy the week by week “old school” TV method. I know not every show gets as much coverage as Succession and I don’t love as many shows as I do Succession but I joined late and binged the first two seasons at the start of the pandemic and now I watch each week to keep up with season 3 and I enjoy the conversations with people on here and/or listening to podcasts / reading articles between the episodes to catch things I missed or get different opinions.

the fun / negative of talking about a binged show or season is making sure that who you’re talking to is as far along so nothing gets spoiled.

both ways of viewing certainly have their pros and cons though and it’s nice that different streaming services have different options for how they do things.

I'm on a team weekly release. Let's the anticipation build which means for a bigger sense of reward and allows for the mind to guess where the show is going to go.

I also feel like there's a venn diagram somewhere showing that people who have this preference also hate movie trailers as much as i do (they give away too much) and avoid listening to too many lead singles before an album is released.

  21. Penlab

That's as maybe. I personally don't listen to too many singles because I've found many times songs sound better within their proper context. I like to hear the album as it was intended.

That said, I do like movie trailers and yet also believe many of them give away too much. I like trailers that show just enough to get me excited and still save something for the movie proper.

And yet I also am not adverse to spoilers. There are some times that I go out of my way to avoid spoilers and other times I go out of my way to find spoilers.

I guess on your Venn diagram, I'm probably somewhere out in space.

You season three is already a bore 1.25 episodes in…

  25. Idk cause like I binged the first two seasons of Titans then watched the third as it came out weekly, same with Amphibia and The Owl House, and I usually like just going at my own pace, but the suspense of waiting for each episode is also kind of enjoyable in its own way, not to mention just the sense of community watching tiktoks of people reviewing like every MCU/Disney+ episode and theorizing what's to come, and this is definitely a run on sentence
