Maybe her earlier movies are better but I did not really enjoy Nomadland so I'm simply not sweating her doing blockbuster stuff

Is this even confirmed that it's happening? What even is that source?

  3. The Last Jedi was my first Rian Johnson movie, and I liked it so much that I went to see Knives Out, and I liked that, too.
Eternals was my first Chloe Zhao movie, and I liked it so much that I'm interested in seeing her previous films.
Then again, I really liked Thor: Ragnarok, but Jojo Rabbit was just okay--and that's perfectly fine, too. I'm still excited that Taika Waititi is doing Love and Thunder. I still watched What We Do in the Shadows and enjoyed the hell out of it.
Yeah, Disney/Marvel is definitely not singlehandedly pioneering the movement towards representation--I'm still angry about Iron Man 3, Doctor Strange, and Iron Fist--but getting Shang Chi and Eternals in the same year has been awesome and I'm here for the ride.
Let filmmakers make what they wanna make. Let audiences enjoy things.

let people post online that a paycheck move is clearly a paycheck move? who here is saying she isn't allowed to make a star wars movie or people aren't allowed to enjoy the bad marvel movie? what??

The phrase "let people enjoy things" is so condescending toward the people you think you are defending.

The criticism isn't really toward the Marvel movies themselves but rather the waste of a young and rising talent. I like fast food once in a while but I would be disappointed if a talented chef decided to work at McDonald's. They aren't going to change McDonald's, but the world loses access to their cuisine. The Eternals was the worst reviewed movie in their series, so it would be better for everyone if some 28 year old second unit director churned out the films the way the stockholders want and Zhao could make her own films.

  7. I get that you'd rather she didn't have to limit herself to the confines of a pre-existing franchise, like, that's understandable, but idk it just feels like a lot of ppl on here act like Disney/Marvel/Star Wars is inherently 100% bad and anyone who likes them is dumb and that rubs me the wrong way.

Some artists really shine on major labels and others lose their charm, you won't know till you hear the music. Artists outgrow and move on from styles all the time and you won't always like it, others churn out the same style again and again, and although the quality doesn't drop its doesn't resonate anymore.

Any criticism of a directors' potential future career path isn't going to hold much weight. Chloe has plenty of time to make many more films, with Disney or otherwise and ill judge them after I see them.

If Mcdonalds was paying the most, all the world's greatest chefs would work there and that would indefinitely change McDonalds.

the Disney entertainment monopoly is unequivocally a bad thing and it sometimes surprises me that people who are hypercritical of similar corporate evil in other industries balk at critique of it in cinema because they like the movies they make

Disney has actively made it harder for other films to even be seen by requiring movie theaters to give them the largest auditoriums, for a longer amount of time, and a bigger percentage of the box office. In 2019, the last normal year, 7 of the top 8 films were Disney films, with the Spider-Man film at number 7 being shared with another studio. In a normal society they would be broken up as a monopoly.

I mean yes and no there are a ton of other companies that are basically monopolies and they haven’t been broken up.

Disney Does a ton of evil shit that should be deplored but the quality of its films is not an issue. Its complaining about the taste of Mcdonalds.

Lol speaking of condescending, was waiting to be talked to as if we aren’t all adults here who obviously understand why Disney’s actions as a corporation are bad despite the fact that we may enjoy the products they make. We all know they’re a monopoly and we all know monopolies are bad. Yes of course they should be broken up, we all agree with that. Are we going to get lectured about owning iPhones too. Big time “and yet you participate in society! Curious!” energy.

In a case like this though, where Disney is literally making thoughtful, diverse cinema harder to produce and access, I feel like it’s more than reasonable to actively point out how frustrating it is and how disappointing it is when young, talented directors end up in that machine.

The only director I’d allow to be swept up by Disney is Harmony Korine

Also that society meme isn’t an excuse to bootlick, lol. People can roll their eyes at major corporations sucking up young talent only to have their final products neutered. I don’t see why that’s an issue. Shit isn’t even confirmed anyway, googling it only turns up that Wordpress

Anyone who can't see the destruction that Disney causes should spend some time in Central Florida (I assume the fandom is just as bad in Anaheim as well). Disney adults are among the worst subcultures.

I don't relate with Disney sucking up directors, that's on the director and it's a valid choice if they make it. It does remind the story David Lynch told about being asked to do Star Wars

I do wonder about how film would look without producers and if funding wasn't a factor. Part of film is that it cost minimum tens of thousands of dollars and every film must go through multiple stages of approval because patrons demand a return on investment. You never end up with one person's vision, its a collaboration or a curation between the director and, photography, cast, writers, music, editors, and then producers.

Sometimes its alluring to lament the state of art, and how we used to build pyramids and cathedrals, 2001 and Synecdoche New York, music used to be composed for grand orchestras and now its bedroom laptops and EarPods, what if Kurt never died but then I look and in every age there's always leading artists with new movements working with whatever they have available producing sublime works.

  22. Backtracking a bit, and potentially going a bit off topic, I was gonna say something about how my interest in any particular director can change over time, and I don't think that's a bad thing, either. I've said this before somewhere, I used to be really into Darren Aronofsky, Nicolas Winding Refn, and Lars von Trier, but now I'm more into Ari Aster, Robert Eggers, and Jennifer Kent. I still really like earlier movies by Cameron Crowe, Jason Reitman, and Tim Burton, but I haven't checked out anything they've released recently. And that's okay. There are always going to be other directors to get attached to, or leave behind. I'm not as prolific a film viewer as others on here, so I'm more likely to hear about/check out a female and/or POC director if they've gotten the chance to do a big studio film, especially if it's in a franchise I'm already invested in.

  23. And now definitely going off topic, I just read that Supercorp isn't endgame. Knowing that Supergirl and Supernatural end with queerbaiting and "kill the gays," respectively, makes me not want to finish them.

  24. And now just straight up spamming the thread since it's 9pm pst meaning almost everyone on here is asleep... when I was looking for horror movies last month I found a lot of cool stuff (horror and otherwise) on Roku TV via channels like Pluto, Tubi, and Kanopy. The latter requires that you log in through your local library but it has a great selection.

grown adults that i went to school with took annual vacations three states away to disney every year. it was baffling to me and i asked them during our third year if it changed at all since the last time and why they go every year and you would have thought i insulted their family
