I've got no problem with an "era" being 18 songs or more. But Handwritten is actually a perfect example of what I'm talking about, because it's a tight single LP that lasts 41 minutes and doesn't have a single wasted note. The only one of the bonus tracks that I'd actually want on the album is "Blue Dahlia." I like the other bonus tracks and covers (especially "You Got Lucky," which is about as good as Petty covers get), but they don't need to be on the proper album, and would all probably make the album a little worse in one way or another.

 

Band did a great job making the album feel like a complete album. I can’t imagine if they dropped it down to 10 and cut a song (coming in around 37 minutes) but it could have worked as a 12 song album too if they wanted to add Blue Dahlia at 44 to 45). The album is nice and diverse.

They gave the hardcore fans the covers and extra more acoustic originals. Era is like 20 songs once you add in everything that’s pretty awesome.

 

No wasted notes is a great description too!

 

It’s 2021, what music related physical medium couldn’t be considered a waste of space anymore?

 

London Calling is the only double album that I think justifies being one, and even that is only 65min so length-wise it’s probably on the shorter end for a double album?

 

I don't skip anything on Big K.R.I.T's 4eva Is a Mighty Long Time, but I know a few songs seem to be seen as skippable by some.

In many double album cases, I often end up listening to both halves on separate occasions now.

I think a LOT of double albums deserve to be doubles. Sign O the Times, The Innocent Age, Out of the Blue, and others

But also Life After Death, All Eyez On Me and He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper

Mellon Collie might be like 2 songs too long in general, but it’s a pretty perfectly executed double between how the mood of each disc is different and how like 90% of the songs are essential

 

Mellon Collie isn’t for everyone, but it’s just about the most effective double album of em all
