Like cut out April entirely and start the season at the end of May. Boom, you just trimmed some significant fat off the season.

only team with a better defensive efficiency than the cardinals this season was the dodgers, so should be a very well played game defensively

Pretty sure I heard that if Theo was going to ever work in a MLB front office again he wants a stake in ownership of the team.

How? You and I know the season as is way too long and it’s a key reason why MLB is having a hard time getting new people to follow it. A shorter season would make things more interesting. Teams who start off hot have a better chance of keeping it that way, it would force teams to play more competitively due to shortened amount of games, and it wouldn’t have to compete with the NBA and NHL playoffs going on at the same time as the season starts. I’m sure people can come up with better reasons but the point is this: The regular season is too damn long and if MLB wants to draw in new blood, it’s gonna have to make some hard changes if it wants to draw people in.

idk, of all the complaints ive heard from people who dont like/watch baseball, the length of the season hasnt been near the top of the list. its mostly length of the games, and "no action" during them. i dont necessarily think the season is too long but like i said above i wouldnt be opposed to a slightly lesser season, 150-155 games. im absolutely not on board with like a 100 game season though. the long marathon of the baseball season has always, to me, felt like part of its charm.

  17. I don't think the number of games will change who watches them or doesn't.

I don't even think speed of games is that big an issue as they make it.

Now, national broadcasts having people shit all over the game and complain about it the entire time ... that may be an issue in making the product something fun to watch ... lol

if you want to grow the game with children, MLB The Show being a very good game and now finally on both major platforms is going to be 100000x more effective than only playing 81 games or whatever the fuck

This is a good counter-point and I totally can see the appeal of the marathon season. My problem though is that it also killed the seasons of many fun teams over the years because of that and to be honest, I’d like to see more of those kinds of teams to make the playoffs. However, I do acknowledge though that the marks of a good baseball team is the ability to be able to withstand season fatigue so there’s that.

If MLB really wanted to fix the pace of play they would eliminate the amount of commercial time between innings but that will never happen because it pays the bills.

national broadcasts being terrible and, the LACK of national broadcasting is also an issue. baseball is a hidden sport unless you're watching your local team on your local network or unless you care to subject yourself to sunday night baseball. MLB needs to market itself better, plain and simple. baseball should have national games 2-3 nights a week, featuring good teams with good players. i turn on ESPN on a wednesday night and its like Pirates/Royals. the NBA has it's best players on TV 3-4x a week. baseball needs to do the same.

  23. Yep, and get rid of blackouts. I should be able to watch any game I want on a random night. Make it easy for people to check into a game anytime they want.

100% agreed about the blackouts. So this season, my TV provider dropped Bally so I couldn’t watch games on there and despite having MLB.tv through T-Mobile, I can’t watch games on the app live because of the blackout rules. It’s total bullshit but because MLB just loves those lucrative TV broadcast contracts, I’m pretty much SOL unless I wanna go to a sports bar or something to watch a game.

The whole marketing players thing has been pitched forever in baseball, the issue is that its just so hard when that player only gets 4 at bats and success rate is 1 hit a game. You can't compare it to the NBA where the star shoots 30 times a game guaranteed.

You can market your pitchers and of course get the stars in as many commercials as possible, but honestly, I never watch baseball unless the Mets are playing, opening day, final week of playoff chase, and playoffs.
