Yeah the priest’s monologues were fantastic. I just didn’t need 15 an episode from everyone else.

Other than the guy who played monsignor, who,, wow wow wow...deserves many awards

To me the woman who played Bev stole the show. As soon as she came on screen, I was hooked. Her character was just so spot on to what the villain of this should be. Every sentence she says is perfect. Condescending, arrogant. "We always hide in the church, but you wouldn't know that, no big deal". Lmao.

One small complaint was the kinda forced, irrelevant "twist?" At the end of

sara being monsignors daughter? I guess they wanted to give a reason to why he would visit the old lady but idk. I don't think it really added anything and made me go "oh, I mean, okay? Sure"

  13. That's the one thing in the finale that didn't feel earned. Their last scene was kind of nice, though.

They definitely laid the groundwork for that though. There was the one comment about the rumor that the priest had an affair and then when Sara is questioning her mom that day to prove her mental acuity, she asks "who is my father" and that's the question the mom stumbles on before answering that he was a fisherman etc.

It was obvious to me and my wife at least. We basically operated with that being open knowledge from like episode or 4. I didn't think the show was trying to make it a reveal or a twist. They telegraphed it pretty openly.

  15. Oh you're right, I forgot about those. Might want to give it a rewatch to see what else I may have missed.

i felt the same way; didn't feel like a twist to me. I think they could have leaned into it more, for sure, but i was expecting it.

I enjoyed this more than both Hauntings. I hope Flanagan continues to do limited series like this.

I have a lot of feelings and the finale gave me a genuine existential crisis where I had to do some laps around the house to try to get beyond it, so that’s usually a sign that something clicked with me. Can’t really think of any criticisms, so much of the way they talked and rationalized things and how easily people got caught in their wake was straight out of my experience growing up in the church. Especially the way they all ignored warning bells in their heads/hearts that things weren’t right but tamped them down and kept digging in. So well done.

Also since it’s come up, the reveal about Sarah was telegraphed from the very beginning, as in episode one. When her mother is really unwell looking out the window during the storm she said, “I see your father out there,” or something to that effect. I knew it had to be the Monsignor immediately, and there were tons of clear hints in subsequent episodes if you were already looking for them. The confirmation/reveal in the finale felt less like telling the audience and more just giving closure to the characters finally.

Don’t know if anything will top Hill House ever for me, but this was wonderful and works on so many levels. The fact that it can be read as a traditional horror story or a cautionary tale about the toxicity of the modern church in equal measure is very impressive.
