Companies can twist their words all the time to justify any backlash when rumors like this wind up being true.

Nintendo now: Oh we don’t have any plans to release a 4K version of the switch.

*releases 4K version a couple years from now*

The public: Hey I thought you said there were no plans to release a 4K version. You misled me.

Nintendo in the future: No, you misunderstood. We had no plan at the time to release anything, but we wanted to explore all options and our plans have changed.

 

It kind of depends on how blatant it is. I doubt they would use such strong wording to lie about devkits. They’d just beat around the bush.

 

Right, but the wording in that tweet is unusually strong, highlighting investors and all that, at least about the specific rumor of devkits being out there

 

I just wanted to call attention to my post here that I think got lost on the last page.

Also, I'm reading more about this situation and Zynga has also denied that they have any 4K Switch units.

 

To be clear: Nintendo is definitely working on a 4K hybrid system. They’re not actually denying that. They’re denying, unusually strongly (to a point where they might really get in trouble it they are lying), that people have devkits.

The recent Digital Foundry video regarding the viability of DLSS in a Switch-sized console made me pretty much lose hope in a Switch Pro anyway.

 

Sure but something like this also likely affects stock prices. It’s really not an average tweet with that wording. It’s not on of their marketing-y accounts either.

 

My theory is they were absolutely intending to announce a Switch Pro this year for release in 2022 but Covid and supply chain shortages delayed those plans so they went with just the OLED instead for the short term

tl;dr:

- Retro is positioned to "remaster" the Prime series in one way or another.
- Bandai Namco positioned to headline Prime 4, built across multiple studios
- Retro's work on remastering Prime proves to be extensive and impressive, diverting Nintendo's attention. Talk is already underway about the trilogy being ported in some form, planning for the future.
- "Leaks" start to crop up about Prime trilogy returning, a miscommunication of what is actually happening. Journos assume the talk is referring to a trilogy port as a whole, which makes sense, as a build of a complete packaged trilogy already exists
- Unbeknownst to journos, Retro has only been working on a single Prime game.
- Development on Prime 4 is up the shit. It's not coming together anywhere near as well as Nintendo hoped, the project is fragmented and unfocused.
- Nintendo reassesses the situation. Retro has exceeded expectations on the Prime 1 remaster, Bandai Namco has disappointed. Executive decision is made to dump Bandai Namco and the multi-studio design approach, and have the game headlined directly under Retro post Prime 1 remaster.
- Retro begins working on pre-production of Prime 4, while wrapping up Prime 1 remaster. Internal plans to continue remaking Prime series (if existed) scrapped and left to Nintendo to plan.
