I didn’t mind the dialogue general dopey-ness of it all. I’m not a huge Wan guy mainly for that reason but that’s because The Conjuring and Insidious and the like don’t swing as big as this one does. The bonkersness of the twist absolves all sin

The whole detective subplot had the acting prowess and direction of a CBS drama.

I think The Conjuring (the first two lol) have enough concern for their characters, and great performances to boot, that I can buy into the emotion of them without being overly concerned with bad dialogue. (the stuff with the Warrens alternatively is a bit icky but I love Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in those roles so much that ehh)

this on the other hand was... not concerned with characters or acting prowess and it made the bad dialogue stick out a lot more to me. especially Sidney's line about foetuses, which is maybe one of the worst of all time?

Bummed this didn't make all that much in the box office this weekend. Hell I saw it opening day and there were only 3 people in the theater including myself. But if it means a quicker Blu-ray release then I guess I'll take it.

Already posted in the general horror thread but this is so fucking bonkers I can’t believe a major studio just released this film. I can’t believe they marketed this as a fucking Conjuring/Insidious rip off!? Even if this doesn’t fully work the pure audaciousness of it is incredible

The ending: i love the possibility that in the end, Gabriel was making her think she beat him, and the ending we saw was not real

Maybe I've watched and read too much Japanese horror, but uhh... Other people have done this better.

Acting was so fucking hokey. Sets all looked very much like sets. Predictable as fuck.

I mean, right off the bat it gave off Tomie / Imprint vibes. Her wig was horrible for most of the movie. The first scene with Gabriel you could see his hand was facing the wrong direction. Like Ian said, the title gives it away.

At least the score was dope.

yall want to see what was clearly an inspiration for this, watch Imprint. I think it is available on Shudder still. It was so fucked up, it only aired in the US once.

I agree with all of this except the score. This movie was ass.

I literally burst out laughing - like guffawing - when the mom fell through the floor and that synth riff started playing

Early on, I guessed that it was some sort of conjoined twin or something and that her head was bleeding where it had been removed. Did not expect the face to be just pushed back into her skull lol, so that definitely got me.

I definitely picked up on the backwards running during the chase scene with the detective but didn't fully put it all together until later on

I definitely didn't see the twist coming lol. I thought it was just her wearing a mask or something (which would have sucked, to be clear)

Then again I rarely think about what the twist is gonna be while watching

  18. I put together a general idea of what was happening about halfway in, BUT that didn't keep me from enjoying the film, and the reveal of the mom falling through the ceiling absolutely got me

yeah, it's dead on to say how great it is that this is a thing despite not being an amazing film, technically. kinda thought the movie that'd fit that particular bill this year would've been venom 2. now i'm not as sure THAT film should've even been released earlier and in so much closer proximity to this one lol

Yeah I do not try to think ahead with horror films and stay in the moment. Most unravel themselves pretty on the nose anyways.

Kills the suspense when somebody asks too many questions too.

Do we have to put spoiler tags on posts in here? I legit don’t think I’ve ever participated in a thread for a new film or show as it was still super new so not sure of the rules so just gonna leave everything in a spoiler just in case

this was quite a wild ride. A lot of good, some not-bad but questionable moments that didn’t do much for me, and a jaw dropping scene and that’s more than most movies can say.

    thoughts in quick format:

    - some real clunky dialogue
    - female detective reminded me of Wanda Sykes lol
    - incredible twist / reveal. Did not see that coming (who would lol)
    - before the twist “Jesus this thing runs like an idiot, is this supposed to be scary this is hilarious” lmao
    - a lot of cliches that maybe were on purpose since Wan has a horror history (classic “house too big for family that lives there”, “character walks in to darkness for no reason / isn’t scared of something that is super odd and would make everyone else run away”, “cops that can’t hit shit if their life depended on it”, etc.). I feel like Cinema Sins will have a field day with this
    - great set design and sound
    - main actress was great. Everyone else was ehhh
    - amazing opening credit sequence and music
    - this was weirdly like an action movie for a lot of scenes (especially PD scenes) which makes sense for the director
    - some truly laugh out loud scenes (chair throwing scene / mom smiling in hospital bed)

wonder if or when we get a sequel.

Catching up on the thread and it certainly seems like most of my comments are in line with what people have posted lol

Like, thinking back on how crazy this was, and if you just told someone what happens you would almost have to think it was something made for the Sy Fy channel or some shit. But learning this had a 40M budget and a major director (and it was written by a major director)? Holy shit.
