It's like he completely forgot how to rap. It's weird.

After 2 more listens this is similarly how I feel.

Upon my initial listen I was saying how it sounded like he covered much of the sounds throughout his discography. But in doing that, it feels disjointed. I really enjoyed the 2nd listening party because it felt as if it was a bit more conceptual. By using his mother's speeches more. I recall watching that thinking he was really onto something. But after some time, it is bloated and an event to get through. It's hard for me to get through all of Notes On A Conditional Form by The 1975 and they're one of my favorite bands.

The melodic moments on this album are what catch me:
    Come to Life
    Hurricane
Moon (which should have been an extension of Hurricane, such a missed opportunity)
    Jail

And much of the other songs where Kanye is singing a bit more. Those songs together feel a cohesive outside of most of the other tracks.

I think his rapping is much better on this than it was on his last few albums. Did you listen to Jesus Lord or the last verse of Off the Grid?

his verse on “jesus lord” is the most cohesive and substantive i’ve heard kanye in a minute but also the album contains the cussin/custody line… land of contrasts

There is some rapping on this that is better than it has been in a while and is even good, but a lot of it is just as bad

It’s a better version of “Big Brother” imo

As it was released at nearly 2 hours…I think this is his worst record besides Jesus is King.

My 58 minute cut of the record I would slot considerably higher.

Still pissed he ruined Keep My Spirit Alive with his verse because that hook and westside Gunn verse are amazing on that beat

  13. That's fair. I think this album is do devoid of anything personal that it stuck out on my first listen, and I think the beat is kinda cool. Still has B-side energy though.

I still say Kanye’s rapping on Kids See Ghosts was the last time he bothered putting together coherent rhymes with actual wit.

I still haven't listened to this album, but I decided to click on to the music video for Come Back To Life.
This song is so boring. I can't believe people have been citing this song as one of the album's highlights. Good to know I'm not missing out on anything.

I agree. I cut that song immediately from my edit. Does nothing for me.

I don’t know why but I’m going to attempt to listen to this again. Made it through maybe 6 songs the first time.

  22. Obviously not at the root of the distaste for this record but it's sequenced so fucking poorly, really feels like it's on shuffle. I resequenced it, cut the bonus tracks and filler for shits and gigs just to see if I could make something somewhat coherent out of the good bits.

In response to Craig saying there might be a brilliant album in here somewhere. This is the best I can come up with as a listening experience, it’s 58 minutes. I could probably still trim a track or two, but I’ve enjoyed just listening to this because I’ll never listen to the 2 hour version ever again.

Purely anecdotal, but it’s wild how little my students care about Ye. They know the Donda chant as a meme but just apathy all around outside of 1-2 kids per class who listened. Everyone just seems bored by his entire persona

Drake had a moderately better response I guess
