Been in San Diego since yesterday, and this was the best first listen due to it being on a plane. Mombasa hits hard when your screeching across the sky

only 1 listen but i was definitely less enthralled by mombasa than the rest of the album

after nearly the full album has transpired and theyve successfully pulled off something new - i think having the very ending of the album explode into the usual tactics and shrieks from their old material is kinda a cheap idea in the third act for me rather than cathartic or whatever they were going for.

I literally yelled “HELL YEAH” reflexively when the heavy part dropped in Mombasa haha, it’s def my fav after my one full listen so far. whole record is super cool tho, I think I need a few listens to kinda glean all that’s going on with it. my gut is telling me it prob won’t top NB for me but it’s def too early to say for sure and also who cares haha doesn’t make it any less of a great effort from the band.

That's awesome. I have loved that song since it debuted.

I really didn't love In Blur when it first came out but I love it now. Thankfully I was able to limit my listens before the full album hit so I didn't overdo it.

In blur is much better coming right after shellstar than as a stand-alone

After two listens, Shellstar is solidified as my current fav. Made me absolutely bawl tonight and I get teary eyed just thinking about it.

Album is stunning. Reminds me of Keep You in how effective their transition from aggressive to more atmospheric music has been.

    I did the exact same.

I'm in the minority where I struggled to get into their first few albums, but absolutely adore OCHL. I had high expectations for this record after hearing GMoC, and I'm happy to say they've been surpassed. This record is stunning. I actually listened to the first LP a couple of times before getting to the second one. If you told me that Justin Meldal-Johnsen would produce a Deafheaven record in 2021 and that it would be one of my absolute favorite releases, I wouldn't have believed you. But here we are.

The whole thing is just so lush. It's not so much a wall of sound as an entire room. And there isn't any filler. Listening to the A side I thought about how Shellstar could potentially be the best track on the entire album, but also maybe not even the best on that side of the LP.

the album sounds straight up perfect, I think. I love everything about the production and mix here and it’s what’s really adding that extra incentive to keep listening. it’s somehow so clear and so lush and everything has its own space in the mix but it also sounds so cavernous in its reverb at the same time, which can be tough to do without things getting kinda mushy and indistinct in my experience. and THE DRUMS, just *chef’s kiss*

between this and the paramore records he’s done (and yeah his work for Jimmy Eat World too although if I am being 100% that band has just had great produced records forever so it sticks out a bit less with them imo)

  25. I think the drumming really stands out. I don’t know shit about drumming but I’ve been impressed with it on this.
