I'd like to take some time to make a list, but I have to think Weave is probably my #1 as well

I knew when I said it sucked P4k had ignored this record that they would end up writing a shitty review and I'd regret ever saying anything. And here it is. Careful what you wish for I guess.

  3. I made it two sentences in. Not gonna hear Foals dismissal like that

As the token Euro my mandatory indoctrination to Foals fandom gives me the authority on this subject to say: what album did that pitchfork writer listen to? Because it sure as shit wasn’t Draw Down the Moon.

as much as i dislike him i would rather they just let ian cohen review emo shit because none of these other writers seem to understand what these bands are about or why they're so important to us

It irritates me that a lot of the discourse around this record has been that it sounds like Passion Pit because honestly it really doesn't much at all, and I'd have a hard time imagining people who are big fans of that band and the Wombats (but not emo) really loving Draw Down the Moon. At least outside of Go Down Together.

see it absolutely reminds me of passion pit at more than one point and thats fantastic because michael angelekos is one of the greatest artists and writers to ever live

I don't love all his takes but yeah at least he gets it, for the most part. Let him explain the record's appeal in glowing terms and then have the editor slap a middling score on it after if you must.

Fair enough! And I like them too. I guess I was talking mainly about the festival-pop-indie crowd the review mentions (with disdain). Those people no doubt love Little Secrets. That certainly doesn't mean they'd love 737 or Speak with thr Dead.

if i had to guess it was either do the uproxx feature on them or do the p4k review and im glad they got the uproxx feature which will in the long run do more for them and tbh the review is getting rightfully dragged on twitter and might even end up being better for them than a mid 7 lol

just seems like a weird personal grudge the writer has with that kind of stuff, passion pit has always been viewed favorably by pitchfork, as were foals at one point. but i get it, the writer had a controversial take that went left of the general consensus on a bubbling emo band, they couldnt resist the clicks, even though it reads like baby's first review because content aside the writing is extremely amateurish and reads like an absolutepunk user view circa 2009

True p4k loved Passion Pit, that huge profile on Michael they ran was amazing. But hey the newer P4k with pointless videos and content sponsored by craft beers is um really cool too

When HEALTH's last record got a 3.6 from P4K John said it was a hit job so ever since then I literally have not read Pitchfork.

I too enjoy craft beer, it's just laughable that Pitchfork told everyone the site wouldn't change with the Conde Naste takeover and now they have an entire section dedicated to advertorials about beer.

Not reading the review but that blurb makes me think they didnt even listen to the record.

What, you don't think the album that opens with frantic screaming and ends with a cinematic ambient-adjacent sound collage should be considered approachable and frustratingly anonymous?

Terrible review and really have no idea why they took that angle.

  22. I think it’s a great review and nails all my issues with this album. Kinda sucks that whenever there’s a pitchfork review that’s contrary to popular opinion, it’s immediately labelled as trash, and the writer apparently has no idea what they’re doing. I don’t see this reaction with any other publication. Why does pitchfork matter so much on here when there are tons of music websites that deserve your clicks that you would enjoy more?

I understand the problems a lot of people have with pitchfork but this review isn’t inflammatory or rude at all. It’s simply a writer who didn’t like an album. To insist that a journalist who writes about music for their sheer love of it (often unpaid or underpaid) is clueless because you disagree with their take and you don’t respect the publication they write for is insulting to the writer.

Like, I would be fucking devastated if no one took me seriously as a writer because they have bones to pick with AP and Chorus. I don’t write negative reviews often because the pile on from fans is so needlessly aggressive and makes me feel like my hard work isn’t worth it. The last thing I need is to be attacked by strangers on the internet for being a woman who writes about music whose view doesn’t align with the majority.

Shaad D’Souza is an incredible journalist. He’s my age, from my city, and has found success with all the odds against him - racism and nepotism running rife in Australian media - but with his DDTM and Pressure Machine reviews, he’s seen as nothing but a cog in the pitchfork machine. Please read more of his work. Negative reviews are an art form - this one isn’t a hit job.

I don't really say this in this thread because of precisely the reaction detractors get on here, but I don't really like this new album, I just think that the comparisons the writer draws the the precise points of criticism don't line up with my impression of the album at all.

So while I agree with the score -- I guess -- it's still a bad review imo.

  24. That’s fair! I don’t connect with the artists they brought up as points of criticism so I feel seen lol

I love Foals, so if this album sounded like them, I'd wager I'd enjoy it more. I do hear Passion Pit, especially because both have a penchant for being (sorry guys) obnoxious.
