I do not get the constant hate for Hold Up A Light

Well, in my opinion, the songs sound very similar to Palms so that's why I don't get it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course.

they're better songs. something can sound like something else and be better. its really not that big of a mystery why someone like myself who didnt like palms would enjoy the new singles.

yea…while these new tracks may not be too dissimilar sonically or stylistically from Palms, the performances/songwriting/production are all better in my opinion

It's boring, one note, generic, and way beneath what they've ever put out. At least that's why I don't like it.

I actually really like the guitar in it. The intro lead part is an ear worm

Yeah but Hold Up a Light has the full Dustin scream at the end so... haha

As someone who's lost a family member down the Qanon rabbit hole, this new song hits really hard, especially the end.

"you don't have to stay inside of that machine, so please come down now, come out from where you've been"

I like Hold Up A Light enough. They’ve got way better songs, but they tried to have an anthematic song (along with The Dark), and Black Honey is a simpler Thrice song and I love it. I still think Palms suffered a little in trying to please all parts of their fan base (and hearing Deep Wells confirms to me because there are some really great songs left off).

But onto a new record. Listened to Scavengers and trying to hold off on Robot but will likely fail.

  10. I don't mind Hold Up A Light, the weird thing is all its criticisms are what I think about Black Honey, which reminds me too much of the weakest parts of Major / Minor.

I think both of those songs kinda suck.

Thrice hasn’t written an essential song since the „reunion“, barely any I’d call good.

and these are especially mediocre to me.

I'd nominate Hurricane, The Window, and Beyond the Pines.

Idk if I'd call any of them "essential", but all of Deeper Wells is solid.

I listened to The Illusion of Safety for the first time recently and that is a real fun album.

I’ve seen pretty much all of the songs I’d want from Thrice live, but 2 that stick out from the Illusion of Safety era are “Where Idols Once Stood” and “So Strange I Remember You” the latter would be so great live and heavy I feel like

I mean more than most albums I think it’s a product of it’s time and clearly not where the band wants to be today (or should be), but let’s not pretend it wasn’t Deadbolt that put Thrice on the map.

    Fight the long defeat.

Always loved this performance. Anyone know if it's been released anywhere?

Beyond The Pines is definitely a stand out song in Thrice history

Although it's not about death, directly at least, I feel it breaks through even more than Disarmed. It's haunting and warm.
It could easily be a M/m song actually. Not that such an observation is that relevant for post-Alchemy Thrice anyway
