Funny to hear someone else say that, the first year of me liking Bleachers at all was pretty much just thinking Don’t Take the Money and Everybody Lost Somebody were incredible songs by a guy who was otherwise best served working on other people’s stuff. The rest has grown on me a lot and I like that whole album, though once I went back and gave Strange Desire a real listen I think it’s a much stronger beginning to end collection of songs than GN. (And this, but after two listens I’m overall very positive on this.)

It's wild how divisive Gone Now can be. To me, it's easily in my top 10 albums of all time and every track is out-of-the-park. But I see why it's not everyone's thing.

That immediately set me up this go around to compare it to that, though. I do love this so far, but Gone Now immediately hit me like a ton of bricks, and this is feeling more like a slow burn.

One listen in and it was overall positive for me. Really love the songs.

Sadly must say that I agree with the production gripes. Sadder still is that it’s actually really sounds great aside from the vocals on about half the songs? Idk. Weird choice.

There have been albums that have come out in the past where the production really bugged me at first, but I either came to enjoy it or just got used to it and focused on the songs.

    Hopefully that happens with this.

haha yeah I get that. The singles are probably my favorites too, but I really love the two opening tracks and the two closing tracks on it, the rest just kinda tied together the themes (which I do really love the motifs, but I think that kind of album is what I was gravitating towards at the time). The singles on this one definitely do it for me, but the rest is just kinda there imo.

I listened to those two albums side by side about a month ago in anticipation of this one. Strange Desire falls off a bit for me in the second half, but is mostly very strong. Gone Now still didn't really hold my attention after that block of three singles near the beginning. There are songs on that record ("Dream of Mickey Mantle" comes to mind) that I feel like are really close to being something special but just don't quite sound finished.

I get the sense he was trying to do a sort of "end of Abbey Road" thing with a lot of that album, where these sort of fragmented songs tie into something greater, but I think having those singles there makes me just want more of those really strong individual tracks.

My favorite thing this did dude has done is his MTV Unplugged performance. Second best UP performance of all time.

Totally agree on Dream of Mickey Mantle, wish it just went for it at the end and it'd be right up there with his best songs.

Hot take perhaps but only place the production really bothers me here is on Big Life, and I'm not convinced it isn't just that I think the overall vibe of the vocal itself is grating. And the volume thing with HDYM is bizarre not to catch on a fairly major release like this (or bizarrely intentional).

Took me a while to come around to Gone Now for some reason, this is much more immediate for me

The production is definitely the most bewildering choice because the underlying songs are great. Gonna take a few listens to get past it I think.

I can’t imagine writing a rad song like don’t go dark and then saying “ya know what this needs? Infinite reverb.”

This didn’t really land for me on first listen, but then again, neither did Gone Now. Probably going to give it quite a few more listens before forming a solid opinion.

  14. this is an interesting listen i’m not sure about quite yet. some of these songs feel a little…faceless?

  15. a lot of these songs sound like the “what [x song] sounds like from the other room in a house party” meme. sometimes it seems ok though? Don’t Go Dark is good

Echoing everyone's thought on production and all that. Some real interesting stuff on here, but it's much more reserved than I expected out of a Bleachers record.

is it just me or is this chinatown mix significantly quieter than the rest of the album?

Jack's interesting because personally I think the fact that he stays in his lane and kinda makes the same song over and over again and it's afraid to be cheesy is an asset, all the 80s sax and the Echo and The Bunnymen sound on Don't Go Dark are so fun

extremely “okay” record, about what I would expect out of bleachers in 2021. not taken by it but can see why people love this shit.

I still can't get into the song with Lana, but as a whole, I'm enjoying this record.
