TOYPAJ is bottom tier Blink 182 for me. The production is great but musically it sits at a weird spot of trying to be more Enema but “edgier” and feeling very sanitized in the end. And lyrically it’s their worst record. Really embarrassing stuff being written by dudes in their late 20s.

Enema also aged poorly lyric wise but it felt more earnest instead of the try-hard stuff in TOYPAJ.

I don’t think every artists writes their lyrics thinking “I wonder what they’ll think of these 20 years from now”. This would be an example of that. Based on the album title, you almost shouldn’t be surprised by that. People enjoyed it when it came out and there’s a lot of nostalgia attached to now. I don’t think there’s too much to get worked up over. I think it hindsight it was more annoying that they tried to add joke songs to California because they should have realized the joke stuff doesn’t age well.

Ah damn, I didn't realize his acct was private. Just a tweet from @danceremix saying TOYPAJ is the worst of the big 4 blink records

  5. Oh ok haha. I mean, I don't disagree. I still love TOYPAJ though. I was about to give my ranking of the big 4, but I can't decide if Enema is above or under Dude Ranch. But yeah, I'd put TOYPAJ at the bottom and Untitled at the top. The middle 2 can be whatever.

It’s ok to love the older band and records. They really get stuck in your head.

I’m genuinely surprised the band was a few years older than me when they wrote TOYPAJ. I already feel way too old for most of the lyrics haha

Me too but I was like 10 when I heard them so I didn’t really notice. I really love the album, terrible lyrics aside (plus there are a couple not so terrible songs, lyrically)

To be fair, I remember being like 11 when it came out and still cringing at some of the lyrics even back then. With Enema, a lot of it was juvenile but at least it was obvious that they were trying to be funny or self-deprecating. I felt like on TOYPAJ, Tom in particular was trying hard to be serious and to relate to the "rebellious youth" types in a pretty cheesy way. I never really connected with that.

This is not about aging poorly. They were bad at the time. A 26 year old should not write that shit lol

Enema, on the other hand, aged poorly lyric wise and it’s a product of its time

TOYPAJ is pretty firmly my least favorite Golden Era blink record.

  12. this is why they'll never do an anniversary tour for TOYPAJ haha

Which sucks because Everytime I Look For You and Please Take Me Home would rip live.

Anthem Pt. II goes hard live too. I’d love hearing Online Songs and Roller Coaster. Reckless Abandon and STFTK are great live as well but have been played somewhat frequently. It’d be dope to see TOYPAJ live.

    House of Protect Ron.

Agreed. It ranks pretty low for me. All Blink albums are killer, but there are very few songs on this record I go back to with any consistency.

They opened with anthem pt 2 when I saw them on Pop Disaster.... I almost shit my pants with excitement

Hot take: I’d much rather go to a blink concert where they played TOYPAJ in full than Untitled.

    Are You Watching Closely?

I used that part in our farewell slideshow for seniors at our senior assembly to start the year... it built up, and when the stopped and came back in, our "Seniors 05" sign popped up and I marked out for my own work that day lol. I'm sure everyone else was cheering for the unveiling of the sign (weird tradition... senior class officers destroyed the previous years sign in a fun way and created/unveiled their own at the assembly to start the year)

a few days late, sorry, but lmao at "trying to avoid tom's worst lyrics" and including "don't tell me it's over"
