Very odd there is no proper NYC date though I guess PNC Bank Arts Center kinda counts.

This Cruel World fest and fests like it are demonstrating how there is now an expanding market for niche tastes geared to an older audience since pop/hip-hop/EDM have essentially infiltrated all the mega festivals (Coachella, Lolla, Gov Ball).

It already got announced, it's just New York, Los Angeles, and Atlanta dates.

  7. I think I'm gonna hit up that Cruel World fest. Lots of cool bands on there.

Absolutely, and I love it! When fests like Coachella and Bonnaroo started they were very much counter culture and not in the mainstream. Pop and it’s associated sub-genres have essentially co-opted these mega fests now and it’s become the new Wango Tango/Jingle Ball type acts being booked, which is cool to give the children what they want.

But it’s even cooler that people are realizing these boutique/genre specific fests are relevant and profitable with an older (30-45yo) crowd.

  10. Gimme all the niche 80s and 90s festivals.

I like it too although it hasn't really benefited me yet. For better or worse, the NYC area has always been the toughest market to get a festival off the ground so while it's been exciting that Governors Ball has been able to survive, they have pivoted HARD into the EDM/Hip-Hop/Pop world after the well of relevant indie/rock/alt acts dried up. No slight to them as they need to produce a mass appeal event but for your dedicated music nerd, the fest has just been less and less enticing to go to. Hopefully we get something like a Pitchfork/Just Like Heaven counter festival in the future.

Too bad Panorama failed, they put together well curated lineups. It’s bizarre that festivals don’t seem to do well in NYC.

It’s pretty wild how viral stars are getting booked at the major fests now. There’s rumors Olivia Rodrigo will be sub-headlining Coachella next year...she has 34 mins of music in her catalogue.

It’s making me feel really old but having things like Riot Fest, Furnace, Pitchfork, and some of the smaller genre specific fests makes its better.

Wow, I'm so happy to see another cool act hitting up Hammerstein Ballroom. Coolest venue in NYC and it went practically unused for 4 years.

That feels....big for Manchester Orchestra unless their draw has increased. I don't even know if they sold out Terminal 5 in 2017.

I know The Neighbourhood are from the LA suburbs but...the Hollywood Bowl seems big for them.

Unlike any other city in the country (even LA) we get every tour plus the one-off promo shows plus other special events. Additionally, we're not a car-heavy city so when people have tried to do festivals outside the city (LI, NJ, etc) it becomes more challenging. All Points West tried doing a Coachella East in Liberty State Park in NJ which was a nice location but was a hassle for people coming from other areas, particularly because they discouraged driving.

Panorama not surviving is...interesting but I think it's likely that they were just 2nd to the market and were at the same location as Governors Ball so most people didn't usually plan to go to two festivals though they were kind of like a more boutique festival. Randalls Island, while convenient, isn't really scenic which also has a lot to do with the troubles.

Also re:Olivia Wilde headlining Coachella, I imagine she'll churn out more content in the next year but, yeah, still wild.
