Hollow Knight is brilliant and so wonderfully crafted. None of the deaths or challenges ever felt unfair because I always knew it was something I did, not the game.

That being said I can very much see why someone would feel that the game isn't paced well or how things may seem too challenging and frustrating. It's a game where exploration and skill are tied very closely together. A lot of getting beaten down, learning from your mistakes, exploring secrets in the world or areas you haven't been to in order to get stronger and then seeing if you can take on the challenges that previously kicked your ass.

The difficulty curve of HK is just brutal sometimes and it often hampers the enjoyment a little bit

Started playing Subnautica, but the screen tearing on console is god awful, especially inside bases. Read that I could use the developer console to turn on vsync, which did nothing except now disable trophies. There was a suggestion to save and quit and relaunch but doesn't appear to have done anything

Kinda killed the game for me. Not usually a trophy hunter but was enjoying the story and getting the achievements.

So I did a little searching, and apparently Celeste is about being trans?! It's on GamePass! --I think I'll focus on finishing Gris for a third time before jumping into another difficult platformer, though...

 

Celeste was so good, frustrating at points, but so good, highly recommend.

 

Celeste is absurdly difficult in places, but there’s an assist mode (invincibility, chapter skip, infinite dash) you can turn on if you ever get stuck.

 

Well damn, how have I not noticed the assist mode before? I've reached the peak unassisted but never managed anything more than that. This might get me to return to it.

 

I feel like it wasn’t there at launch and was patched in at a later date, but I’m not certain about that.

 

I think you're right because I don't remember having the option to have an assist when I beat it.

Coming to accept that I just don't have the patience/will to git gud at games these days. I want a bit of challenge but I don't need an additional source of stress in my life.

 

Just started Celeste. Yeah I read about assist mode, it's good that I can toggle invincibility on/off, and dash assist is also a huge help. I feel like I can get through this without getting too frustrated.

edit: infinite dashes is more useful than invincibility, I just don't abuse it unless I'm actually stuck...

Yeah I wouldn't have made it past the first level without assist mode.

 

It was ALWAYS worth it. Rewards were perfectly calibrated, getting a new means of traversal or attack right afterward. I think the scaling is perfect and the design is best in class

 

This is pretty much how I feel too. I'm not good at a lot of games and I don't particularly like the idea of challenging games like Dark Souls, etc, but this is the only game that made me feel like it was natural. It all clicked and made sense.

 

I think I'm gonna try to continue with Hollow Knight as well, and just take a breather every once in a while. I really do enjoy the art and level design, I just wish there were more benches.

 

Try Dead Cells for a little bit of an easier time. But I definitely agree Hollow Knight is the most brutal of the Roguelites.

 

My favourite Roguelite is still Rogue Legacy. Simple and outstanding gameplay. I highly recommend it.
