I also think young adults (or even adults, like podcast weirdos) need to be taught about the boundaries of parasocial relationships and no matter how much they engage or relate to an artist, they, in the end, are not their friends or have a personal relationship with them.

To me, it’s not the difficulty of whether or not musicians can do it. But what gets made of that when it becomes a social media standard that’s disingenuous?

For me, I am nobody with a large platform of course but I haven’t posted about it because I’m pretty anti-religion and mostly ignorant to their conflict outside of what I learned in high school. From what I have gathered from online posts and John Oliver, is that at the heart of this is a religious war and Israel is unlawfully displacing Palestinians with brute force and they have twice the military power. So at the end of the day, citizens of both countries who don’t want war are going to pay with their lives. And that to me, is a disgusting reality that religion still to this day has claimed more human lives than anything else on this planet. That’s my take on it, it’s harsh, it’s insensitive to those who are religiously devoted and comes from a place of privilege looking in from the US, so I just chose to keep my mouth shut because it seemed like the best option.

There definitely seems to be more of a push now for artists to be activists than I remember seeing a few years ago

I can understand issues that are directly related to an artist, like Twenty One Pilots fans asking them to stand up for Black Lives Matter, since they are profiting from two genres created by black artists (and of course they famously messed that up). But I would not expect them to have a public stance on Israel and Palestine.

  5. I don’t think that being a musician = also being an activist, but I do believe that if you’re lucky enough to have a platform, you should use your voice for something greater than yourself/your music. I’m not suggesting that anyone gets “cancelled” (oh, how I loathe the term cancel culture. Let’s call it consequences culture), I just respect an artist more if they’re about more than their music

Saw this on Instagram. It sucks how women artists are the ones who are compared to other women/accused of copying other women/unfairly critiqued/dealt with unfair standards but men don’t face the same issues, which was highlighted here. Kinda goes along with the whole artists accused of cosplaying indie, as it seems to only happen to women.

Absolutely bullshit. I bought most of my non pre-ordered records from this store, along with plenty of books. So, so awful.

I just posted about it in there but it very well could have been that no one was aware.

Believe me, if I had been able to find the social media posts I had been told about again, I would have. I don’t just post shit not using the original words of the people involved though.

If people on this forum are actively avoiding talking about the situation that is really shitty but I am inclined to think that no one who is a fan of them on here was aware of it. Did this get a lot of traction on Twitter/Instagram? I saw it on Facebook posted in a The 1975 fan group after scrolling for a while, but I don't follow the band much.

That sucks about Bullmoose. Gonna email them to cancel a couple of preorders I had pending and make sure they know this is why

I love how much of discourse is dominated by cishet white men self-aggrandizing and operating on the most bad faith takes imaginable. definitely isn’t exhausting at all.

The amount of times on this website I am expected to keep up with/know every detail of a band is exhausting. If that’s how you choose to spend your time fine, but the arrogance to come in with no explanation is astounding.

IMO there’s a big issue with people conflating not being aware of someone’s abuse (especially if it’s an artist they don’t follow closely) with willfully not caring or enabling it. I only speak for myself here but most of the bands/artists on here that get busted aren’t people I listen to, so the prior context of red-flag lyrics or behavior isn’t always there. Nothing wrong with sharing your opinion of a problematic band, but just don’t be shitty to people if they weren’t in the know.
