I would never suggest Aesop to anyone unless someone has shown interest in indie rap but somehow never heard of him. He’s so god damn dense, I totally understand why some people wouldn’t like him or want to listen to more than one or two songs.

He just fits into the “I usually don’t like rap but...” category for me. Not his fault, but I can’t shake it.

interestingly enough, that phrase has all but gone out the window in recent years which is dope

I never knew Aesop was that popular growing up. I had a specific handful of friends where I grew up that were fans, but others that didn’t like that style of rap at all.

But those friends mostly only listened to Fab and Jadakiss.

Actually I liked both, but I’d pick Jadakiss in general and Fab’s best songs over someone like Aesop any day, haha

I like both too. Just were the best examples off the top of my head for favorited NY rappers from that timeline.

Also just put on Some Rap Songs, its so good and also feels like a gateway album into a lot of really interesting underground hip hop.

Agreed but it also feels like a record that's purely Earl, if that makes sense. No one else could dream up that album. Feels straight from the heart.

My favorite song and somehow the most emotional is always Riot at the end. Amazing how much a perfectly instrumental can make you feel something so heartfelt.

  11. I’m gonna have to put on Some Rap Songs sometime soon. It’s been a while since I’ve tried but I remember when it came out it didn’t really click for me. Love I Don’t Like Shit and Feet Of Clay though so idk what happened there

I wish I did, but I just don’t vibe with the direction change after Doris. Then I saw him live in MSG which is so not the right setting for his style and that made it worse.

I'm fully aware there is probably VERY little overlap with this thread and The Circle (tv show), but the guy in the first episode who has a sign that says "Jack Harlow #1" is exactly the kind of person I would imagine is a big Jack Harlow fan

I was just listening to a podcast and one of the hosts said that his brother said “I feel sad that I kind of missed out on DMX at the time just because my backpack was on too tight”. I’m really happy I was never like that man. It would really have messed up my experience. Too many alleged Hip Hop head were/are like that, ESPECIALLY white people.

I just discovered the Spotify podcast DISSECT, wherein the host breaks down albums track by track. They're covering Yeezus right now and it's fascinating.

2Pac, Mike Tyson and the craziest rap concert in Cleveland history

Damn, I've lived in the Cleveland area my entire life and have never heard the crazy stories surrounding 2pac's final show in Cleveland (and one of his final shows in general).

    Kind of nuts.

    * Krayzie, Wish and Flesh Bone spent three days in jail after approaching Don King's daughter and members of Death Row at a Cleveland hotel prior to the show.
    * Layzie Bone got into it with Suge at soundcheck (but pac brought Layzie out on stage during the show)
    * Pac brought out Mike Tyson - Tyson had just gotten out of jail.
    * The writer from Cleveland.com says the show was so unfocused and disjointed. She was really disappointed. She said people were booing and throwing shit on stage, including one guy throwing his crutches.
    * Set was just 8 songs (it was an arena show)
