Agree with all of this pretty much, though the "Synthesizers" distinction is a little nitpicky, I doubt she put too much thought into the title. I also don't think I've ever seen someone put "Let It Go Where It's Supposed To" so high. And leaving off everything from the second half of Stay Gold is criminal.

 

Well, she starts the article talking about how the best songs he writes are the ones he doesn't give away, so it sort of seems like that was the goal. I also just don't see how, out of this catalog, "Synthesizers" would get anywhere near the top five anyway, but that's just me.

Agreed on the second half of Stay Gold. I'm making a top 21 right now and all three of the last three tracks are going to be on there.

 

Okay, here's my top 21, mostly in order:

 

"State Line" is my favorite. Can't understand how that was left off the list. Protest!

 

Seriously. I already don't understand how it was just a bonus track.

 

It makes sense though. He's playing the songs that have been released because his fans will already be familiar with them. I do wonder if the setlist will change after the album drops to include more from the new album. Good gripe though. I was hoping he'd play Irish Exit.

 

Well, that's true, but the album's been streaming for a week and most of the people going to the shows have probably listened to it multiple times by now. I hope he puts some of those songs in. The first half songs are great, but I think the second half could be even more fun.

 

I will say, the closing with Record Store acoustic rules.

 

I don't disagree. I really would love to here him play that whole record front to back.

Also, I will say that Synthesizers was my least favorite song live. The album version is great, but it just didn't sound good live to me. That top 21 list makes no sense either. I wish some of these writers would just title their lists with favorite instead of best.

 

Yes and listening to him talk about what the song means to him made it even better.

 

damn he didn't do that in Athens. would have loved to hear that.

 

A few posts back is the live stream video from Atlanta. Just go to the end of that to hear it. In fact just watch the whole thing!

I have no doubt about it, especially since Suzanne is there and can sing her parts.

I really loved "Synthesizers" when he did it on the Spade tour. They did the "Come on Eileen" bit and that was fun. But I think it was also elevated by the fact that Jake Sinclair was in the band at the time and Michael Trent/Shovels & Rope were opening for him. Since those guys wrote the song, it was cooler seeing him play it with them in the band. He's played it at the two shows I've seen since, but I think Jake was there for both of those, too. Doubt it would be as much fun without him.

 

That solo on Closest thing was dope, haha.

 

Again...I agree with that, but as I said, acting like you don't even understand the concept of it is just silly.

You got "Bullet Belt"? At my show, he did nine of the 10, but left that one off the setlist.

 

Yeah, not as the full band, but Butch came out and performed it with Shovels and Rope during their set

 

Hey, I never said you were stupid, just acting like you didn't get it, mostly because "fundamentally disagreeing with the concept" isn't the same thing as saying "WTF does 'forced twang' mean." I don't really care about this, just not really fair for someone to essentially say 'I don't like his voice' and have people act like they don't even get the concept of that.

Anyway, I'm realizing now that I never actually hit 'submit' on my preorder for this, so I guess I'll just buy it on iTunes so I can have fun like everyone else here. I think I could probably wait the few days for shipping, but since I'm going to see him tomorrow night I'd like to hear the back half of the album.

 

Oh yeah, I think you told me that once. I remember really, really wanting him to play "Bullet Belt" and being kind of pissed that it was the one song on the record he didn't touch.

Let's just leave it there. Not really worth talking about any further.
