Late to the party but The Last Blockbuster, while an interesting story, is a pretty badly made documentary. Random weird segways that make no sense (“the smell of Blockbuster”), bizarre recreations sometimes with puppets and sometimes with people...? And randomly having a comment by someone from Smash Mouth. Very strange.

The Blockbuster smell is 100% real. But it absolutely loses steam in the second half when it’s clear it has nothing left to say. Like who cares that Doug Benson visited it? The predictions that movie rental stores could come back are so laughable.

Could have done with, like, 7 less minutes of Doug Benson walking around a Blockbuster.

  6. there's a video rental store a few minutes away from me that was fun to visit. i got a membership, rented a couple movies, returned them a few days later, and haven't got back since.

and yeah, the blockbuster smell is totally real. in that documentary, when they're all talking about opening and closing the VHS case, i was like "holy shit. it wasn't just me obsessed with playing around with those boxes!" haha.

the doc was very nostalgic and fun, but yeah, it wasn't a great movie or anything.

I hate that there's no easy quick way to get rid of things. I think there's a long winded way if you log in to the web app and something something, but I only watch on my TV and there's no way to do that. The feature works in theory for TV, but noty for movies you stop watching part way in

for awhile I would fast forward to the last two minutes or so of something and then let the credits play out just to get rid of stuff on my “resume watching” section but that got old quick. There should be an option to remove shit with a simple button press, come on it’s 2021

Yeah I tried doing that with a movie that I wanted to get rid of, but it didn't work initially. It is gone now though, so maybe it didn't register right away. Who knows.....

Haven't seen the documentary. If the suggestion is that Blockbusters & Family Videos could be a big thing again, I obviously agree that's absurd. I do personally feel like library/rental-type places with interesting selections & a mix of movies, books, etc., could work as small, sustainable niche establishments, though.

one guy in the documentary said to bring the stores back, have food/snacks AND make it a dispensary, with the dispensary being the main part of the business. Which I could see that working on a smaller scale. Although idk how often people buy weed so those rentals might be out for a long time lol

The blockbuster documentary had way too much VH1 style trying to hard to be funny commentary and not enough actual documentary stuff

I liked Bad Trip, it reminded me a lot of the Impractical Jokers movie. The main bits were good and made me laugh, but the story in between was meh.

If you log into Netflix in a browser, you can navigate to viewing history and remove stuff you don’t want to see in continue browsing. Not the most efficient, but I do it from time to time to fix my algorithm after my little cousins watch a movie

I honestly miss video stores. Going in and browsing and finding something you haven’t seen or haven’t heard of was awesome. Now there just every movie ever made available 24/7 is overwhelming.

It’s really a weird mix of having way more and way less access at the same time.

As much as I would love rental stores to come back, and think that the dispensary idea is a good one, the biggest problem is a lot of people don't even have dvd/blu ray players anymore.

I used to work at a video rental store, it was awesome. I had like 4 customers a day and only to rent porn, never learned how to apply late fees and watched movies all day.

Then a guy missing most of his fingers got me fired

Was his missing finger a part of why you got fired?

Our local Family Video tried this and worked with the pizza place next door. It was one of many that closed over the summer. Maybe you could do it with a small niche market of people looking for curation and stuff not on streaming. But I feel like you would need decent financing to get it off the ground, which is why I laughed when Kevin Smith said it could come back. Like, hey Kevin, you have the money - you go first.
