You should check out Ta-Nehisi Coate's run in Black Panther. It's really well-done. Plus, they're doing a spin-off that is intended to focus specifically on the women of Wakanda.

I actually always thought Marvel had better diversity with women and POC than DC once you dig pass the top tier heroes.

I hope they bring back Shuri somehow for the Women of Wakanda series. I liked her a lot, and given how Secret Wars ended it would make total sense to just have her back alive and not even really have to explain it, so I'm a little confused as to why they didn't (unless it's explained in Coate's Black Panther run but it hasn't come to MU yet so I haven't gotten to read it)

Really? Well, I guess I don't mind being proven wrong if that's the case! I can just think of a few POC off the top of my head from DC as well, such as Cyborg, Amanda Waller, John & Andy Diggle, Vixen, Black Lightning. There's also Cisco Ramon from The Flash. Anyway, it's no big. I enjoy comics. I'll go read BP now.

What happened? It's definitely gotten really, really bad. I really like video games and I keep up with the industry closely, but reading any comment section or joining pretty much any group is largely a no-go because it is so damn toxic.

The relationship with my now ex and his friends. All big gamers/anime fans. Their general behavior towards me and their hypocrisy, it was just a bad, baaad time. Mainly post break up. And the last time I was in a big party of people over Skype, I would hear "rape/pussy" (from both men and women) pretty casually and it just irked me a lot. The last time I went to a convention (August 2015 I think) with a good friend of mine, one of the guys at the booths was asking if I was there "for support". Just. Sigh.

My old roommate used to work in casting for commercials. It is incredibly racist and none of it is accidental.

I'm sorry you had to go through that. Sadly that sounds about right. It really is terrible that people have to go through this stuff even with regards to what should be a simple form of escape. As a straight, white male, who at least isn't targeted directly, I still hate it. It's also the main reason I really don't have anyone to talk to about video games, which, although trivial compared to what other people go through, is sometimes annoying.

Anyone who isn't a straight white dude (aka me) got a good take on this line of thinking?

I think that's a stupid comparison. Specificity is important, otherwise we get down to simplistic analysis of power relations. Black men do have more relative privilege than their counterparts in the community, which can often translate into awful and violent views, but there is not the systemic wherewithal behind them. They should be held accountable, obviously, but I think that sort of comparison erases all difference, leaving it open to manipulation by white people.

I've seen a lot of internet rightist try and say this was only a matter of mental illness, not of Islamaphobia and/or racism, based only the the fact that this Lebanese persons was actually Christian, as if that fucking matters at all. My ex-girlfriend's father's family were first generation Lebanese immigrants. Even in the legal community, you'd be surprised at the whispers and elbow prodding about them being Lebanese-- my racist old boss asked me if, when I went to one of their weddings, they'd be checking for explosive vests. Keep in mind that her family, like most Lebanese immigrants to my understanding, are not Muslim and are in fact Maronite Catholics.

I mean, it seems that new generations are trending towards strictly Islamaphobic views as opposed to racial views that demonize all persons of Arabic descent, so I guess that's progress.

Have you seen videos of that YouTube-famous (I think, at least relatively) gamer girl who makes all the videos about how feminism is stupid and how there is no sexism in gaming? I'm not a gamer myself, but I see the videos pop up online and it's really, really annoying. Even more annoying is that, if she were not objectively gorgeous by commercial standards, these lonely misogynists wouldn't even give a shit to broadcast her opinion.

I couldn't find her on Youtube. But I went to my "worst" comments from my old imgur account (I commented that this person is an idiot) and this came up.
