well, there’s also a ton of very dumb shit in that movie, but it’s the best of the three IM

Watched this tonight. A lot to digest but it’s mostly improves on the theatrical version. Cyborg definitely benefits the most from the lengthy runtime.

The only complaint I ever hear about it is the reveal that Kingsley is just an actor. And that that ruins the whole movie.

Whoa whoa whoa. Let’s not try putting IM3 over the original Iron Man, which is one of the greatest cbm ever made.

It’s fine. Maybe more functional than IM3, but less personality.

The first “Iron Man” is the only good Iron Man because it’s the only one where Tony is remotely likable.

He’s very vulnerable in IM3. I appreciate that. Likability isn’t an essential character trait.

I like the stuff with the kid, actually. Pearce is uncharacteristically weak in the movie though. But the rest of it makes up for the lack of a strong final villain for me.

Also gotta respect the flex of Shane Black insisting the movie take place at Christmas simply because he is the one making it lol

Iron Man 3 is near perfect, but if Ike Perlmutter hadn’t kept Shane Black from making Rebecca Hall the villain, it would’ve been perfect.

Ike Perlmutter was a goddamn disease at Marvel, in addition to just being shit person in general, and it is extremely good that he's not involved anymore

Is the kid at Tony’s funeral at the end of Endgame?

I mean, there's a clear differentiation from how the creators of those two viewed them and how Disney wanted Tony Stark to be viewed.

IM3 always felt like a movie at odds with itself, from what Black and Disney wanted. The first half is super interesting, especially with Tony dealing with PTSD and anxiety (It really hit home with me, as I was struggling with anxiety attacks for the first time in my life). But then it just kind of solves itself, I guess, and ends with a wet fart of a villain (I have no attachment to Mandarin, so that didn't bother me) and Tony vowing that he's doesn't want to be Iron Man (until the next movie). As a big Shane Black fan, it was a big miss for me.

I get that. The third act is the weakest part, but I personally still like it a lot. Love that the movie have the two extremes of letting Tony function for a while without the armor & letting him have all of the armor. As a kid who loved the mediocre 90s cartoon & had a ton of the action figures where you could mix & match the shiny exterior, I definitely had a certain itch scratched by that finale, lol, more so than in any of the other Iron Man films.

The PTSD thing used to bother me, but I once read a piece by someone who personally connected with how his anxiety was handled, so I don't mind it as much. Still think it could've been handled better, where it felt more like he learned how to cope & less like his willpower cured him, but it's fine, I guess. The epilogue is a funny relic of a time when they weren't sure if RDJ would walk away after his current contract, but as someone who doesn't care about canon, I don't mind watching it as an ending to his story, lol.

IM3 was an interesting rewatch for me because I wasn’t a big fan before and while that didn’t change, the reason why I didn’t like it did change or at least became clearer. The first 2/3rds are great and almost everything after the Mandarin reveal is a mess and I used to blame it on the reveal, but it really has nothing to do with it. The stuff with the President & Vice President is weird, Guy Pierce is a bad villain (made worse by his “I am the Mandarin” line), extremis Pepper is poorly done, the random destruction of all the suits for no good reason, and to me the biggest issue is the disappearance of the PTSD stuff which was really meaningful and the driving force in the first half. All of that stuff happens after the Mandarin reveal, but not because of it, so I think it was easy to blame the reveal for the poor end when it was probably studio interference more than anything else.
