If he has no bonus then you save the entire salary.

If he has a bonus, I believe it's one year of the bonus is paid out this year, the rest goes on next year. So, I sign a 3 year 50 mil deal with 21 guaranteed. If you cut me that year, you have a 7 mil cap penalty (or dead money) and then a 14 mil cap penalty the next year. If it's like 17 mil a season you free up 17, but have 7 in the cap hit, so you'd save 10 mil this season.
