Al Ewing’s new Guardians team looks fucking nuts.

 

Doctor Doom & TWO Quasars, lol.

Between Guardians & SWORD, Ewing's really settled into Marvel cosmic. Which, isn't an area I spend a lot of time reading, but based on what everyone's been saying, it's a perfect fit. Happy for him & for all those Marvel cosmic fans out there.

 

The first few issues of SWORD have been great. Shame it started right as King in Black was happening as the tie ins aren’t that interesting.

Actually is anyone reading Ewing’s We Only Find Them When They’re Dead? It’s a great concept but I find it so so hard to follow with the art and the constant time skips.

 

I was a big fan of his 2015 Ultimates run which I feel like would have similar cosmic vibes.

 

Oh yeah, the one with Blue Marvel & the golden Galactus, that Rocafort drew at first? Totally forgot about that series.

This looks great! I was hoping it would be Soule. The premise is intriguing and the art looks amazing. Excited for a big Star Wars crossover event.

The prelude issue for that Boba Fett event being drawn by Steve McNiven is dope. Dude's interior work over the past few years has been basically nonexistent.

Did some BWS-inspired work on a short Conan story by Roy Thomas and in just the first & last issues of Return of Wolverine... and, before that, what, an issue & a half of Secret Empire? I think Uncanny Inhumans in fall 2015 was his last stretch of consecutive interiors on a series, lol. At least he still does something basically annually, instead of going full cover artist.

The Batman '89 one looks dope. That aesthetic translates so well to the comics format, imo, especially with someone like Joe Quinones who's both great & a big fan of the material. Love the sketch here with Bruce in the under armor suit that's from that classic action figure:

Not super into the Superman '78 one, tbh. Feel like the biggest selling points for that film (outside of historical significance & capturing aspects of the character I can get from reading the comics that came before it) are Christopher Reeve & John Williams, neither of which translate to comic form. Doesn't help that the main Superman books have often themselves leaned into the films, most overtly under Geoff Johns & Gary Frank.

 

I agree re: Superman '78. Way less hyped. I just know that ever since Quinones went public with his and Kate Leth's pitch years ago, I wanted this comic to be made.

Now, there's no Leth involvement, but still, very hyped.

 

I used to really like Kate Leth, but from what I’ve seen said online here & there, occasionally by people in the industry who’d know, she’s a bit... problematic? Don’t remember many specifics other than her feminist “Valkyries” organization being bad for women of color & her shutting it down instead of addressing those problems. But, yeah, that makes me less bummed she’s not involved, lol.

I do think it’s kinda neat that one of the writers of the original ‘89 film (who I believe does have comics experience) is writing the comic.

 

I will say I did not know all the Leth related drama, so yeah, probably for the best, then.

I just read King in Black issue 4. Go buy Doctor Strange issue 384 (2nd print) before it skyrockets!

Marvel’s solicitations included the 5th Amazing Spider-Man omnibus, which goes all the way to 180! Nice. I think they’d only need one more to get to where the Roger Stern omnibus picks up.

Also, May’s Marvel Tales reprint issue collects the Thanos Quest 2-issue miniseries that led to Infinity Gauntlet, where he gets all the Gems. Don’t have any of the collections it’s in, so it’ll be nice to be able to get just that story to go with my Gauntlet trade.

 

Into the Spawn-Verse, more or less, lol. Releasing a "Spawn's Universe" one-shot this summer, followed by three new monthly books over the following months: King Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn, & Scorched (basically a team book of various Spawns).

Funny that McFarlane is going from one Spawn comic a month to one a week, & annoying that the creatives he namedrops include some who are definitely just doing a cover or two, but still, a lot of potential in there. One of the three writers on the list is Donny Cates, which is exciting. And, Jim Cheung is confirmed to be one of the interior artists on the one-shot, & I think Mike Del Mundo might do some interiors too. Plus, even if it's just one cover, I definitely wanna see Frank Quitely & Art Adams draw Spawn. (Would be cool to see even one woman on the list, though.)

There's a non-zero chance I decide to give one of the monthlies a shot, especially if Cates is confirmed to be writing either Gunslinger or King Spawn.

 

Anyone been reading or read the Boom Studios MMPR series? The new Green Ranger reveal made me wanna read them, and I've been binge reading through the whole series in order and it's been a very fun ride.

 

I read the main book up through the big multiverse battle with Drakkon and then kinda fell off, but I was surprised by how much I liked it considering I only ever watched the original MMPR and even then I only kinda liked it as a child.

 

Recently read The Thing by Dan Slott for my podcast (it had been picked as a topic before I knew about Slott being terrible to work with, so I plan to make note of that in the episode). I thought it was a fun little series and enjoyed the Lost reference having recently watched that.

On another note: I'm trying out doing some reading guide videos that break down the solo series for a character. Started small with Ms. Marvel since there's only a handful. But I'm curious if these videos are actually useful?
