How do you get to 10?

  2. Dizzy is not even in my top 40. I think I’ve only listened to CTL maaaaaybe 10 times. But probably less, honestly. After Clarity, BA, and Futures, it was a letdown for me so I’d just listen to those older ones when I wanted to listen to the band and didn’t give CTL a real fair chance.

For me, CTL sounds like a band trying too hard. It’s still majestic. But it doesn’t hit the same.

It could also be that I was listening to this after I got fired from my first job and I have bad memories of that time, sitting in a house I rented with friends, trying to figure out how I would come up with my share. I would rather listen to the three album run before it to remember when life felt expansive and possibilities endless, instead of the post graduate reality.

“Big Casino” still slays though. Zero argument.

The only band that comes close to Jimmy in terms of closers in “the scene” is Yellowcard.

I remembering being so happy about how great of a follow up CTL was to Futures. I was impressed. Especially after how powerful of an album Futures was and still is.

Clarity, BA, Futures, and CTL....in a row....

    Goddamn amazing.

its fun to see those lists and see other peoples opinions because it’s not someone picking every single or being elitist fool. I did get to the end and think, Dizzy. And then the other “what about”’s crept in. And you doing these lists you want a little flavour from the entire discography too, plus the proper Stay On My Side love.

Jimmy is just another one of those consistent bands who’s songs stand up over time.

Again, Jimmy has been great at releasing contrasting records back to back. It’s intentional and skillful. Don’t make the same record back to back, make the opposite sounding record while still being the same band. Brilliant.

Integrity Blues has smooth and key driven. Surviving is meant to be punchier and riff driven.

CTL is so good and the bsides are just as good. Probably the record I listen to most by them.

It would take me quite a while to pick my favorite 30 Jimmy songs.

There are some I feel like *should* make it, like Disintegration, but I've listened to that song WAY less than something like Stop or Appreciation.

    True.

I like Chase This Light, but it's probably ranked 4th or 5th on my list. Also came to say that I miss my Clarity stream.

Disintegration makes the most of top 30 for sure. Creates such a dark desperate atmosphere and the band sounds strangely comfortable going there, just because they can.

There’s gotta be some universal must have from from this band amongst fans.

I have a weird gap in music in my life where I missed a ton of bands from like 2002-2010 or so. So for me, until about 2011 or so, JEW was that band that did the Middle and Sweetness. Until I bought all their CDs at once and tried to process them all then; at that point, I didn’t even know what order stuff had released in.

Every time I do this with a band, I end up with wildly varying opinions than most of their fans. And with JEW, I wasn’t aware at all that Clarity and Futures were the albums everyone adored and said were the best - I had no memories or nostalgia at all, and no expectations. What I found was Invented, Bleed and CTL were much more immediate albums - those were my favorites as soon as I listened to them. There was an urgency and an accessibility to those that weren’t there for the others. Futures took a little bit for me to get into and Clarity took me quite a bit. (Interestingly, I liked Static Prevails more than Clarity for a long time... and still kinda do)

All of that is to say that I think the band has made records you need to sit with, and records that you don’t. And it doesn’t surprise me at all to see folks, here and elsewhere, consistently saying they love one group and not so much the other.

This is pretty similar to me. This website in particular urged me to consider Futures and Clarity outside of the obvious singles and immediately grabbing songs.

I also got into the band around the same time as you, though for me it was the combination of my parents getting XM Radio at the same time that My Best Theory hit Alt Nation.

That's how I felt back when the album came out. I so desperately wanted futures part II. If you accept that its not another Futures, I think its great.

I'm sure I'm not the only person in this thread that was a casual fan who became obsessed with them WAY later than most people... I was one of the kids who only knew The Middle when I was 10,& I was 8 when Clarity came out. I didn't really understand their appeal (find them relatable) until I was a young adult in college, and they became one of my favorite bands almost overnight in like 2011-12. Thanks Jason & everyone in this thread & on AP for hyping them up so much forever

TLDR; I got super into Clarity over 10 years after it was released.

I think every album has something cool to offer. Different things for different Jimmy fans. They don’t just hang on to past success either which is nice, because it’s can constantly grow your fan base without losing anyone. I like it when bands don’t have clear cut #1 albums and good fan bases.
