I found the middle issues of it to be really good. There are some really cool ideas explored in it, but I think they stretched it a tad thin with it being 12 issues. If they had cut it down to just 7 issues with only Coipel on art duties then I think it would of been received a lot better.

 

And I think I had mentioned it to you before, American Vampire is great. It is about the first vampires in the US, dating back to the late 1880's and spanning, so far, to the space program in the sixties. It's so great.

 

I'll absolutely check out anything you guys recommend me at this point. I haven't been let down.

I'll probably wait on it though because I wanna buy tons of volumes of all the Marvel and DC i didn't get to read or haven't caught up on.

It's decent. If you're an X-Men fan, it's an essential story. Especially to know where Prof X is now...

 

I'm a new comic book fan. I just finished Locke and Key, I'm currently reading Preacher, Hellraiser, Scott Snyders Batman, American Vampire, From Hell, and The Walking Dead. I've also been jumping around a lot to what's considered classic Batman stories and loving them.

Yeah I think I've really been lucky moving over to a new medium and loving everything I'm reading. I've always wanted to get into comics but it just seemed so overwhelming. When I finally took the plunge I had a whole bunch of recs in the back of my mind. Looking forward to finding more in this thread

 

I think I need to read what I have before diving into any of the new stuff coming soon. Currently have a bunch of Image trades like Saga Vol. 4 and 5, Manhattan Projects Vol. 1, Descender Vol. 1, and quite a few more. I likely also have some single issues to check out. I know Lucifer, Chew, and Southern Bastards are among those, but that's all I can recall.

Didn't take much convincing haha. Another Horror comic to try would be Hack/Slash by Tim Seeley.

One of the hottest writers ATM actually. That was one of the first books that got me into comics actually.

Also if you like TWD check out Kirkman's other series Outcast. And if you end up liking Hack/Slash he has another book called Revival.

Alright I'll stop don't want to overwhelm.

 

Art looks great and I'm willing to take your word for it. You were right about Snyder's Batman.

Oh man, the plot to Hack/Slash sounds so great. I was going to wait but I said screw it and ordered the first omnibus...I haven no control on amazon.

I've definitely looked at Outcast, that's one that keeps popping up everywhere as a rec. Planned on waiting until I had a healthy start on TWD and I feel like I do now so it might be a good time to check it out.

Also, how about that ending to Locke and Key? I don't think it could have been more perfect. Joe Hill's novels have had great endings too but that was a whole different level.

 

Just finished up Batman Vol. 8. @Colby Searcy you were right about the trades/arcs being accessible. Looking to get my review up tomorrow so I'll likely do more of the arc overview on that.

You'll be disappointed to know that I have yet to finish L&K.

I've read through the first couple issues of Omega(that IS the first few of book 7 right?). I plan to go back and reread all of it very very soon.

There are definitely subtle hints and callbacks to his earlier arcs(typically in the background or small dialogue) but each pretty much stands on its own. Honestly though it's so good I don't know why you WOULDN'T read it all. Just in general I know your predicament haha.

If you enjoy the art, check out The Movement as well. Freddie Williams II did art and Gail Simone wrote it. Small 12 issue "mini"-series.

Any ideas on some solid comics out there? I've always been a Spidey fan, but I'm open to new suggestions for comics with a great plot and nice artwork.

 

You a total newbie to current/recent comics? I've got lots of recs, and I love Spider-Man.

 

Not a total newbie, but out of the game for a while. Here are some of my favs in no particular order...

Civil War
Marvel Knights Spider-Man (loved the artwork)
The Walking Dead (love the show/grittiness)
Ultimate Spider-Man
1975
Kick-Ass

 

I really enjoyed the recent runs of Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel before the new ones that started a few months ago. I also loved Fraction and Aja's Hawkeye run.

RECENT SPIDER-MAN:

-All of the Ultimate Spider-Man stuff with Miles Morales is wonderful.
-On that note, Spider-Men was a good miniseries by Bendis and Pichelli with Miles meeting 616 Peter and teaming up against Mysterio.
-Superior Foes of Spider-Man was a great comedy heist series about c-list Spider-Man villains. The Sinister Six with five members, told from Boomerang's perspective, bumbling through the Marvel NYC underworld.

CURRENT SPIDER-MAN:

-Spider-Man is the current Miles Morales series, now set in the main universe. Still Bendis and Pichelli. Still good.
-I dropped Amazing Spider-Man because I needed to trim my pull, but I do dig Peter Parker as an international businessman, somewhat Iron Man-esque. Feels like classy Spidey, yet fresh. Worth trying.
-Spider-Woman is one of my favorite comics right now. ADORE it. Gorgeous Javier Rodriguez art, and surprisingly great premise: The recent arc had Jessica Drew pregnant, give birth, and then an issue of stressing about motherhood. The writer and artist are both semi-recent parents who worked closely with their wives for the story.
-Silk is a great new Spider-character. Cindy Moon was bit by the same spider as Peter but accepted Ezekiel's offer to hide in a bunker from Morlun as a kid. Now she's free and adapting to life. Classic Spidey feel.

OTHER COMICS:

-Ms Marvel by G. Willow Wilson, starring teenage Pakistani-American Muslim nerd Kamala Khan, who's an Inhuman in New Jersey, is my favorite current comic series. She's an excellent, charming, and immediately relatable character. All comic lovers, and especially fans of young superheroes, must read it, honestly.
-I second the Hawkeye recommendation. The Matt Fraction run, which ended last year, was immaculate. Perfect art, perfect colors, perfect down-to-earth story. Required reading.
-The first arc of All-New Wolverine was surprisingly good. New Wolverine Laura/X-23 was supposed to be a killing machine and was a clone of Logan, also supposed to be a killing machine; in this arc, she tries to save some clones of her without healing factors who are are meant to be killing machines. It's as perfect a look at the idea of Wolverine as a non-Logan story can be.
-The Black Panther series starting next week, written by author and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates, looks great.
-The whole Avengers/New Avengers/Secret Wars epic by Jonathan Hickman, if you're patient, was excellent. Secret Wars is easily my new favorite company-wide event, and New Avengers seeded it from the start. Avengers was New Avengers' sister series, with the two functionally becoming one title during the "Time Runs Out" lead-up to Secret Wars. Start with this New Avengers trade and this Avengers deluxe hardcover, and if you like them, move on to the Infinity crossover. (This is the best way to avoid redundant volumes, plus those first volumes read well by themselves so you can decide if to continue.)
