I've dug into some of his songs before, but this is the first time I'm digging into this album, at the recommendation of a friend. And yes, it's so much better than the dang football game right now.

I’m glad you said it so we didn’t have to.

On most days, it’s my favorite record of theirs. “The Rain Song” is my favorite Zep song

    It's a beaut, for sure.

I listened to this record on a 7-mile run in -5-degree weather this morning. More proof of me being a dumbass, but the music got me through it!

I don’t think I’ve even run seven miles in my whole life

Some days, I wonder why I became a runner. This was one of those days.

I respect that runners love themselves in a way I never will but at what cost

There's definitely a weird badge of honor to putting yourself through grueling, miserable experiences in the name of...fitness I guess? That said, the cost is much higher during a northern Michigan winter.

“No Quarter” is a masterpiece but it’s not running music. Haha

Luckily, by that point I'd turned around and was at least no longer running into the wind.

Yeah, that one got played twice.

Zep probably my favorite band of the 70s. Beatles have the 60s for me but they take the 70s

    hmmm

If I had to listen to No Quarter every day for the rest of my life I wouldn't be upset. An absolute classic. A band like Tool wouldn't even exist without that song.

I don't want to exaggerate but it's one of the best songs ever.

Curious do you know they covered it? Or was that bizarre serendipity in your comment?

  19. JM95

    hmmm

Ha yeah I'm well aware they covered it.

  20. Day 7 (a little bit late). I'm not at all well-versed in rap, but I don't need to be to realize that this album is obviously a masterpiece. It's wild that he was 20 years old when this came out.

The production on Illmatic does such an incredible job evoking pre-2000 NYC on its own, and then Nas’ voice more than fills in the rest. Hope you got a chance to read the lyrics while listening, it’s absolutely better than most novels.

You have to be a little bit of a nature boy and a little bit crazy to be a distance runner. Very much hoping I can get back to normal mileage by March/April, I’ve been dealing with foot and back issues since like October.

I gotta check this out. His album from last year (Anime, Trauma, and Divorce) was fantastic.

  24. Yeah, I read along on Genius. The annotations about the samples and beats were great too since I don’t really know anything about that era in hip hop or NYC.

Sorry to hear that. It's so frustrating when you can't follow your normal running routine. Hope you can get back to full strength soon.

But yes, there's a certain kind of madness to the sport.
