I’m going to go out on a limb and say that there’s more to this story

 

I’m not sure how you can expect anyone to respond to that. Like, who wants to take the time to dissect that and craft a coherent reply to even a quarter of it after navigating all of the meandering gripes/accusations.

That novel length post is just my unloading of a year's plus worth of observation where I chose to just remove myself from the equation to avoid any further negative experiences here.

I'm also not pretending my take is perfect. If you disagree that's cool but in my mind you all already followed the same pattern explained in the post which I'll outline once more and then remove myself from this thread hopefully permanently:

Every post preceding and after my post has likes except for mine including a comment claiming my post was "legitimately offensive" (with no explanation as to how) and others showing similar condescending mockery. None of it is over the top but it adds up. I figure the longer I wait the more people will pile on and get their jabs in because that's always the pattern here.

As I was typing this someone apparently searched through my post history now to try and cancel me by posting a quote of me from idk how long ago, without context to demonize me. It didn't take long for the mob mentality to set in and go for the throat.

Unrelated, I saw a new Skepta song called "Cancelled" and it was high level cringe. I don't think a lot of these people have any idea what accountability actually means, they think they're famous so they can do whatever they want with no repercussions. And actually, they're usually right, so I don't know why they would even complain about the thought.

 

In case anyone in this thread finds this helpful, a handful of people being rude to you on the internet is not akin to being cancelled, dogpiled on, or attacked. (Edit: or "silenced")

You can say "y'all are mean and you suck" and, sure, because that's subjective. But let's save words for what they actually mean, shall we?

 

I am a straight white cis male, and have never been tried to be silenced or whatever because I didn’t like an album made by someone who doesn’t look like me. There is *definitely* more to that story lol.

 

Either that, or maybe the perception that they were canceled is a way blown out of proportion interpretation of what was really said to them as I feel is so often the case when someone feels “silenced”

 

honestly it usually just tells me the individual in question has no idea what being silenced actually entails or feels like

 

I mean I literally pulled something you wrote from the thread your entire post was referencing.

 

Should be a drinking game for looking at forums. Take a shot every time you read the words/phrases "cancel" "mob mentality" "witch hunt" etc

 

You cherry picked a line that sounded demonizing without proper context or the lead in. I had already been name-called and told I was a fool for not being in love with the album because I was a male. I didn't just pull that line from nowhere. I was in fact having my opinion be invalidated because I was a dude, and people felt emboldened that this was okay in this instance because the artist themselves apparently tweeted similar messaging. This person went out of their way to insult me when I had been polite and flat out asking for information and understanding and I was still the one demonized as if I went out of my way to attack this person by the rest of the users in the forum.

It is what it is and I didn't expect anything different this time. I see something I say something. Be nice to others. Don't mock and ridicule those just because they don't understand something or have a different opinion.

Alright - I'm out of here. Keep on doing the important work of spreading the word of those who need to be held to account. That part of this thread is certainly very useful. Have a great weekend everybody.

Like honestly I don't particularly love that Camp Cope record either, but you came into that thread saying "I don't really get what's so great about this album" after you said you passively listened to half of it.

 

I am going to say this directly to you once before suggesting the thread move on: Electing to drop an opinion on a public forum and being taken to task for that opinion by people who feel differently isn't cancellation, or being silenced, or anything you've just characterized it as. And yes, this is in no small part due to the privileges your identity affords you, because who says what and to who matters. Subjugation isn't rudeness, oppression isn't about people being jerks to you one time. I don't know what your goal was here, but I sincerely hope you achieved it.

This has nothing to do with that specific argument and I could care less. I only went back there because someone took the time to search back 3 years into my search history and share a line from one of my posts that made me sound like a monster.

The point is - ganging up on people when they show any disagreement isn't cool. End of story. And for the person who posted just before me as I was typing this. I wasn't taken to task for my opinion. My opinion was on the music. I was called a fool and told my opinion had no place because I was not the right audience/gender/sex.
