What’s even weirder is how high this was on iTunes all week. It was top five most of the time, and even today, with Foo Fighters releasing something and whatever is going on with the racist country guy, they’re still #13.

So people still are buying Weezer albums. Digitally and physically. They just aren’t doing well with other stuff, apparently.

Justice for Jacked Up and Summer Elaine, some of the most infectious hooks they have brought. TGFG and Wind in Our Sails can stay in the mediocre b side territory and stay there

it was the top new release on spotify’s “rock” chart the week it came out. i’m sure this is true to an extent but they’re a pretty huuuge band and the band did the rounds for press a lot.

i’d imagine they hold VW until they can tour/play every late night show though

Yeah, normally I agree with the “Chorus FM bubble” for most bands we talk about on this website but we’re talking about one of the biggest, most influential bands of the past 30 years. This album has been plugged for weeks by pretty much every single major media outlet And 9 of their previous 11 records debuted in the top 7.

Debuted at #27 with about 16k sold (10.5k pure sales, 5.5k from streaming)

I’ll have to listen to the White album b sides to present the better replacement. The other 8 songs on the album are so much stronger to me ‍♂️

Obviously anecdotal but I do know one person who considers herself a pretty big Weezer fan but didn't know about this until I told her yesterday

This may be a hot take but I don’t know if I would call them one of the most influential bands of the past 30 years. Aside from the Blue Album (and you could say Pinkerton too), they haven’t had an album reach that level of acclaim from fans or the media. I feel like they are a step below bands like Radiohead, Nirvana, or even Green Day who have had multiple albums that are deemed influential (especially Radiohead who I feel most embody the being influential for 30 years part).

There’s a difference between popular and influential though. When I look at greatest albums of the 2000s lists, or albums that often come up when you ask folks the best records of the 2000s, I’m not seeing the Green album mentioned, whereas for example when I look at best albums of the 90s and best albums of the 2000s, I’ll see Radiohead mentioned numerous times and people talking about those albums.

It’s cool they have been able to stay relevant as long as they have with a mixed bag of work though!

I know when Teal came out and they had a hit, there was a lot of ‘those guys still exist?’ For a lot of people, there’s just a gap between Beverly Hills and Africa and the seven albums that existed in that timeframe didn’t register at all.

They also had a less than one month rollout for this album, and the single came out like a week before the record dropped. There wasn’t much, if any, promotion for this album in particular, and a lot of people haven’t paid attention in 15 years anyway.

I also think Weezer contributes to their own anonymity too. You can find them playing massive shows on YouTube and they play stuff from Blue, Green, Make Believe, and a medley of other stuff. Maybe Pork and Beans and one off Pinkerton if you’re lucky.

But basically, if you were to watch them play in 2019, it’s essentially the same setlist as 2005. They’ve never made any effort at all to make songs from the last 15 years stick at all, with very few exceptions. They put out albums and just never acknowledge they exist live.

10m people listen to them on spotify every month

i’m sure that number is comparable on AM

their tours, when tours happen, do good business

i mean, they’re huge. cmon. it’s a bit at this point but if we’re gonna say most people don’t know weezer anymore, than we have to assume most people also don’t know jimmy eat world has had music after the middle or foo fighters after best of you

Yeah but the level of influence Blue and Pinkerton have had puts them in that conversation. Those two records have been enormously influential to many, many artists over the past nearly 30 years.

I honestly am more surprised that white did so well in 2016? Didn’t seem like they had any big singles, critical buzz was positive but not wildly positive. Seems weird that just a year and a half later Pacific Daydream did that much worse by comparison

This album deserves better than a #27 debut.

I think this is probably true in a lot of cases. I saw Motion City Soundtrack when they were touring for Go or Panic Stations (I cant remember which) and a whole group of fans were talking about being there for MCS but not knowing if they had put anything out after Commit this to Memory. They’d all paid $20 a ticket and just wanted to hear ‘Everything is Alright’ and ‘The Future Freaks Me Out.’ It was astounding to me how this whole group of people had paid money to get in and didn’t know there were multiple records since then.

I think a lot of casual fans get stuck in a certain era. And it happens to all of us - I listened to Beck as a teenager, and love ‘Mutations’ and ‘Odelay.’ I haven’t a clue what he’s done in 20 years (other than win a Grammy for an album I haven’t listened to). I was a big fan of Arcade Fire’s first three, and then tailed off because I just was into different stuff after that. It happens.

Didn’t Thank God for Girls have a crazy video with a guy eating a cannoli? I feel like I remember that being big before the album came out. Maybe that was it?

This was around the same time as Panic!’s Death of a Bachelor. I remember Alt radio was huge then. Couldn’t escape these two albums and the eventual tour they had together. Even if you didn’t follow Weezer, you knew at least three songs off White

Pandemic def hurt them with Van Weezer. End Of The Game was high on the alt chart for awhile, Hero seems to have done well, they had a song in Bill and Ted which was one of the more talked about movies last year. They were kinda doing everything right but didn't wanna put it out without that tour.

    Related to nothing at all:

Maladroit is a perfect album and should be revered like Pinkerton and Blue. Hell, it’s better than Pinkerton in my opinion. It’s just so perfect.

I wonder if Van Weezer gets another delay because they’re definitely not touring this summer

I assure you many, if not all, of our favorite bands in the past 15-20 years were influenced by Weezer in some shape or form. they may not be as influential as Nirvana or Green Day, but it doesn’t make them not influential. I disagree about not having an album reach acclaim from fans or media. Literally every single one of their albums from Green to White debuted in the top 7 on the charts. White I believe was No. 4, 22 years into their career. White and PD were also nominated for Grammys and most of the albums from Green until now were pretty well received outside of a few laughables.

They can headline any amphitheater in America with no problems 27 years into their career.
