Remember when he broke COVID rules the week he was to be on SNL and they had to reschedule his performance. Dude truly sucks.

 

Can we talk about this? How musicians like the Dixie Chicks and Kacey Musgraves have essentially been blacklisted from the country music world for their beliefs meanwhile Morgan Wallen will very likely get no major repercussions from the country music world for his racist (and prior reckless) actions. This double standard with regards to how men are treated versus women in the country music industry has gone on far too long and I feel like it isn’t mentioned enough.

Not talking about that guy specifically since he’s clearly a shithead, but it’s not clear to me how one typically distinguishes between whether someone is doing that as a white power sign rather than just an OK gesture. Is it just based on everything else known about them?

 

I dont know that typically musicians flash the OK symbol in the middle of performances? But yeah in the context of the confederate flag image its probably safe to assume he knows what he's indicating.

 

So when I asked last week if Morgan Wallen was typical bro-country, I got a resounding no on here. Those responses aged poorly pretty quick.

This incident will probably just turn him into an “outlaw country” star. That whole industry is gross.

He also could’ve done like, any other hand gesture like a thumbs up, or something instead. I think it’s safe to assume that he meant what he meant by flashing that sign

 

Not to defend that dude but I’m gonna need to see a video. Fuck him for the flag thing, but there’s too many alt right scumbags taking screenshots of people counting or using their hand to emphasize something and then misleading people to believe it’s the white power thing. That’s where it originated from, a common hand symbol that everyone does (sometimes without knowing it) that they co-opted. It’s typically very clear when people are using it to use it as white power.

my friends and I would throw up a hand sign in high school that stood for our neighborhood (it was a joke but it caught on in pictures) that looks like an upside down “ok” or the circle game. It’d be mortified if someone took a hs pic out of context to try and “get” me.

 

That’s just kinda my question though — that it is an otherwise completely innocuous, universally known gesture that has been co-opted only recently and only within a relatively minute community. Not with him specifically, but if I see any random person on the street do it, I don’t really assume that they’re making a secret alt-right symbol. It’s not so infamous at this point that I would assume the average apolitical person would have any idea that it can be something more insidious. So I just don’t know what does (or should) go into determining that beyond knowing a bunch of other things about the person. Like if I knew literally nothing else about this guy, I would totally think “yeah it’s not absurd to think he is just giving an OK gesture during a performance, that genuinely isn’t weird at all” lol
