I literally don’t see how it could be a plug for audible in the context of the lyrics in Grapes of Wrath.

clearly he’s talking about how high the volume is on his headphones.

 

if you want, you can always edit Apple Music so that the song IS at the end of Van Weezer. I think there’s a pretty good chance it’s on the album anyway though

 

The one negative thing with this album is it still sounds like New Weezer. Every release since Make Believe or Red has a goofiness that I've learned to live with but marks the clear divide between the end of them being an incredible band and the start of them being a hit or miss one. This album has some great stuff but falls into the same traps that bring down the other post Maladroit albums, even if it's bringing more to the table than the average New Weezer album.

tldr it's good but I still 100% understand people out after Pinkerton or Maladroit and this ain't gonna buck that

 

Then there’s the new album’s “Grapes of Wrath,” in which Cuomo sings about blissfully falling asleep to the sound of an audiobook — only he doesn’t say “audiobook” but specifically name-checks Audible in a bit of product placement that would’ve horrified any self-respecting ’90s kid.

“It never occurred to me that that’s a weird thing to say,” Cuomo insists, and of course it’s true that the lyric’s precision makes it more real. But he also has a twinkle in his eye as he says that his managers have been working on a cross-promotional gambit with the folks at iRobot.

I'm glad we got the best of both worlds from Weezer this year. Introspective stuff on OK Human and anthemic power pop on Van Weezer

I guess I'm going to have to choose to sing it with the meaning I prefer to keep myself from disliking this track. I've always specifically disliked direct references to products or things that could directly age a track.

Oh Rivers, you goofy man.

 

I really don’t want to be argumentative, but I think that goofiness has always been there. Blue had the sweater song; Pinkerton has El Scorcho; Green has Hash Pipe; Maladroit has Dope Nose. Those are all objectively goofy songs with goofy lyrics that reference pro wrestling and gay prostitutes and all that. I think it’s more pronounced from Make Believe on (so I definitely get your point) but this has always been who they are and what they do.

 

You've never encountered a record that you started out hating and, eventually, flipped over to absolutely loving??

Though I guess you can always revise how you view it.

 

Full disclosure: this made me smile because my wife uses Audible and it made me happy to understand the reference.

 

for a hot second at the end of "La Brea Tar Pits" I thought we were getting a string outro of "Undone"

 

It's silly early to rank but I know it's above Green for me, and if I instantly know it's top 6 I'm ecstatic. It could move up for sure, it's definitely a different record to digest. I don't dislike a song, I know that much

 

Aloo Gobi is pretty perfect to me

 

Uhhh maybe not that drastic but sure, of course. I'm not saying I hate this, it just didn't do much for me. If I listen more I'm sure I'll like it more

 

Listened through 3 times in a row last night. This album is very much my speed, I really liked it all the way through. String arrangements over classic sounding Weezer and songs that transition right into each other? Count me in

 

ever sing I heard long time sunshine ive wanted a weezer album like this. love it.

Digging this on first listen. The arrangements make it a really fun listen and definitely give their sound a new life. Also love the flow of the album.

 

Just spitballin here, but this album feels like it'd make for a cool musical. As some have mentioned, the way this album is sequenced and how one songs flows right into the next, it really does feel like it's all one piece.

I mean, this is kind of what we had always wanted (or at least I did) out of Songs from the Black Hole, right?

 

At this point, I'm pretty confident in saying Weezer has made at least 10 "good" albums and only three that I don't enjoy on a regular basis, so for all their ups and downs, they're a relatively solid band in my book. Kind of a weird way to put it when you never know what you're getting, but there's a reason most of us keep coming back even after being burned.
